Audio Technica ATR-3350 Battery Life

Just wondering from those of you who use the ATR-3350 how frequently do you change the battery. I've been doing about three, five hour rides and then changing it just because I have no idea how long it should last and I don't want to get home and find a five hour silent movie on my camera. This mic would be perfect if it just beeped or something when it was about to die. Thanks.

Yea its annoying as shit...

About 3 rides I'd say as long as you're on top of turning if off when not in use...buy the big packs and keep a few with you

Yeah I carry a few extra batteries. The problem is they probably will never do me any good as I have no way to know when it's dead. If I could find a mic that's just as good has some way to alert a low battery, but costs a lot more I'd buy it.

You can certainly mod it so that it will show you when the battery is low. I bought two of these mics and this is my biggest gripe. I have forgot to shut them off twice, and I KNOW that's going to bite me in the ass one of these days.

well sonofabitch!

Thank you for contacting Audio-Technica United States (ATUS).

Battery life on theATR3350should be about 1,000 hours. Depending on usage, that would be about once per month.

Also, I would not recommend cutting the cable down to make it shorter. That will create the potential for greater noise, and void theLifetime Limited End-user Warranty.

Thanks for sharing!

Hope this helps!

1000 hours? ... Standby? ... Or hours of usage/cycles total after charging? ...

Great they reply .. But it's a bit ... Vague?

hmmm still a bit vauge but this is good enough for me :D

Thanks for the reply!

It should be on the “On” position. However, if the microphone won’t be used for any extended period of time, the battery should be removed. You might also want to try using an SR44 battery for extended life.

For frequent use, I generally recommend replacing the battery once every 4 to 8 weeks, again, depending on usage.

If your batteries are (still) draining too quickly, then you could always send it to ATUS for an evaluation. I provided a link in the original email regarding Service with ATUS and the Limited Lifetime Warranty related to your ATR3350. We’d be happy to take a look at the microphone for you to make certain it is performing to specification.

Hope this helps, again!

Well 1000 hours is 41.66 days ... So theoretically if it was left on for that long? .... Still betting it's 'up to 1000 hours standby' .. !!!

1000 hours under use. There isn't any complicated electronics inside to take up power, it's just one transistor.

It's not even worth it!. You DON'T NEED a powered microphone for an action camera.
The 3350 is driven by popularity and comes from a community not related to the "action camera" scene. Somebody saw the recommendation from a video forum that is focused at DSLR's and those recommendations are not too relevant for our action cameras.
I get it, it's hard to choose a microphone and the Drift or gopro mic is expensive but the 3350 is not the "one size fits all" mic you all should be getting.

Using a powered mic means making an internal part of the camera redundant, it's the microphone pre-amplifier. Your camera has one built-in and you're attaching another one between the mic. That's the part in the mic that requires power from the coin battery. It's redundant and not needed and you're getting into a world of trouble to make that mic-preamp work, messing with batteries, power switch, not knowing when the mic is working since the camera doesn't have an audio monitor or audio level meter.

Also, the ATR-3350 is a Lapel mic. Its a mic made to be held far away from the mouth, out of view, to capture voice at a certain distance and has a long cable to make it run from the actor to the camera or recording device.
The amplifier inside the mic makes sense for that application because it needs to amplify the voice because it's not close to the mouth and also, the signal needs to overcome the noise that such a long run of cable may catch. With a low-level signal, the noise will be high enough to get mixed with the voice, making the recording useless. The solution is to amplify the voice signal as soon as it gets to the mic, then run the amplified audio through the cable and the noise becomes insignificant.

I should make all this into a new thread.
