anyone using separate voice recorders?

One left!

Cheers Dan. I was considering the Zoom, but it costs and I don't need multichannel, just ambience, bike is quiet and little of the tone makes the helmet, so a pocket recorder would be ideal, as long as the inbuilt mic is up to picking up full range.

How well would this work with no mic for just ambient? Have you ever tried it?

I haven't tried it, but there are two sensitivity settings on the inbuilt microphone.

One is for "dictation", and the other is for using in a "conference" (i.e. more sensitive to pick up more distant voices), so I would think that at least one of the settings would be good enough for ambient noise in a pocket.

Of course, you could always mount it on the bike itself for even more ambience..... ;)

That's where I got mine from. I've had no problems with it.

You can download the instruction manual from here:

Same reason basically. Very happy with mic placement and audio quality in the Lazer, but it doesn't capture much else. I thought Zoom originally as it might avoid the need to sync voice and ambience, but if I'm syncing the camera anyway...

I was gonna get the zoom but i just want engine, can sounds. The Olympus will be more than enough,it takes seconds to match up in editing software

Has anyone tried a decent low dollar shotgun mic used in filming with their pros/ghosts/action cams? I have used a direction mini condenser mic in helmet with some good luck but I just thought why wouldnt we use a mountable shotgun mic out of helmet to really focus on engine/exhaust noise. Here is a test of my shotgun mic I got for $30

at the beginning i did try recording the sound with my phone ( S4 ) but i must say it sounded rather weird

I too use a lapel mic and my phone I'm planning on getting a zoom h1 or h3 in the near future for a nice audio upgrade

I never needed to. But my cameras are inside a car, outside the wind... it the mounts rattle from time to time, but that's user error (= me not tightening the camera enough).

When I start motovlogging I will probably go to a external voice recorder. The camera's I got (sony action cams) will fit on the side of a helmet just fine, but the mic jack is located pretty inconveniently. I could mod a case... I'll see when the time comes!
