I know all of you "pros" are tired of hearing newbies like me about complaining about mic problems on the Drift HD, but this is driving me insane. I've been struggling with it for a good month now and can't get it right. Right now I have the mic wrapped in Teflon tape like Toast-to-go suggested and it did make a DRAMATIC improvement. barely any wind noise (my mic is above my eyebrow). The returning problem that I'm running into is a crackling noise whenever I talk (yes, my mic sensitivity is set at one bar). I dont know what to do, it has me so frustrated!! Here's the link to my first video that shows the problem I'm referring to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcfH-3Ljt7I&feature=youtu.be

Set your mic level at no bars. Unless they've changed it again that should be the low setting. If yours is muted at no bars then do a firmware update. They've changed it several times so who knows what it's like on the latest firmware. When you get it set the way you like it don't do any future firmware updates because they screw with things all the time and never clearly tell you what the firmware updates do.

Can you post a pic of what the mic looks like? Only thing I can really think of is, did you stretch the Teflon tape tight over the top of the mic or just lay it on?

It was doing it before I put the Teflon tape on too, I'm starting to think that the mic i was sent was broken or something.
Do you know of any other microphones that people use that give them good sound?

I have the old Drift Stealth, so I am stuck with the drift mic. There maybe a problem in the connection point on the camera if you had the same problem before using the tape. I guess with the Drift HD, you can use any mic you want. Can find some cheap stereo mics on ebay.

im sure I'll figure something out :/ Shoulda got the Ghost, everyone says that the ghost's sound is revolutionary compared to the hd

I guess I lucked out on going with the Ghost. I'm still playing with my mic setup because I still get wind noise over 60 MPH. The weather has been such crap lately that the freeway is just no fun. It has either miserably wet and cold, or rideably chilly and massively windy.

One of these days....one of these days....

lol yeah i know the feeling, Florida is so back and forth with its weather, It should be 80 right now but instead its 57

Why does Drift even put a level 3 on the sensitivity? I was playing with my settings earlier in the week and accidentally left it at 3. Messed up an entire awesome day of Vlogging.

Back to the old school rules... If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Could you maybe just use another audio source? A smartphone, a voice recorder from an electronics store or wal-mart, etc.

I don't use the Drift HD mic at all, internal or external. I use a bluetooth intercom system, and bluetooth it to my iPhone. I then sync the audio (begin each clip with a few claps so that I can sync the audio by lining up the peaks, then I mute the Drift HD's camera).

I do that simply because it's what equipment I have, but it's not too bad a way to do it, and might be a solution if you don't figure out the issue.

For the record, today I rode for about an hour and a half. My iPhone was at 100% when I left. Recorded audio using an app for an hour and a half. It was at 96% when I got back. Recording audio, even over bluetooth, doesn't use up the battery at all.

Crackling noise is nearly always down to a poor connection or damage cable in my experience.

You can experience it on any mic by not plugging in the jack all the way making the best possible contact.

I would check there is nothing stuck at the bottom of the microphone port that may be interrupting a proper connection.

If not replace the mic, if that doesn't work it's most likely a faulty unit I would try adding audio on top of the video from an external source, just in case it's your listening device.
