Alternatives to the Drift Rear Cover??

I going to now buy the Drift External Mic since the device I was using has broken. There's now way I can justify or afford an extra £20 on the rear silicone cover. What home made alternatives have you guys seen or heard about?? I'm not worried about it being waterproof just something to stop the worst of the dust and spray through winter.
 
A condom with a hole in to thread the mic through ?, its rubber and waterproof and will protect your drift from STD's :D

but seriously try using cellotape ? that may work to keep water/dust out.
 
ive got the Drift cover, but a plastic food bag can do the same job, ive just done a quick mock up for you

take one food bag with a ziplock closure system

cut to the size you need, tape up one side, slide your mic through, tape onto the drift and thats it :)

the ziplock allows the mic to pass through and zip back tight as a semi good seal.
 
That is a very good idea. Only problem is when you reach 30+ if the wind gets under the bag/celotape it will cause it to just act like a parachute and pull off. (possibly take the mic with it.)

Before I purchsed the Drift cover I was thinking about cutting a hole into the rear door and wiring it up like that.?

On YT there is a vlogger called 'Ericbusa' he's deffiantly a guy to subscribe too.

He's made a Drift Mod which I'm sure he'd be happy to help as he's done with others.

I'm sure it will be fairly easy for anyone who has a small amount of understanding about how wiring works. If not ask him and I'm sure he'll help.

I don't want to cut a hole in the back, beacause I still want to be able to take the mic out, shut the flap and have a waterproof camera.
 
i didn't tape the bag onto my drift as i have the silicone cover, but i doubt it would come off if tapped on properly, the zip also allows things to be removed and the bag sealed again
 
i would really suggest splashing out, far better than some tatty looking (no offence 10ftup, that's a great idea) mock up!

Can't, my boots have given up the ghost, the day after I brought a new tank bag. So money is tight. £20 would be a couple of weeks petrol, and Im trying to save as much money as possible. I'll get one in a few months, just want something to tidy me over till then.
 
it might be best to just vlog on the nice days untill you can afford it. (yes we don't get many) but atleast your vlogs will be in the better weather rather than rain.

if rain looks like its in the forecast (don't vlog) or if it starts just pull over pop it in your tank bag and away you go?

It more the constant spray we get this time of year, that's why it doesnt need to be waterproof, just some sort of cover there.
 
Yea, I understand I was in the same postion, I was messaging quiet alot of drift users asking is it worth it. Yes it is. But say your only vlogging once a week twice tops, might be worth using 10ftup's idea just for now.

hope you find a soloution sooner rather than later. :)
 
Have just got a Drift HD170 Stealth with intentions of Vlogging and have devised a cheap rear cover solution when using the mic.
Firstly a word about mounting the Drift to the helmet. Luckily by using one of the visor retaing screws plus the Drift belt clip and a small piece of aluminium the mounting finished up as in the picture below. This still allows chin flip guard and the visor to operate normally.

Then after removing the hinge pin from the rear door and detatching it the mic was plugged in

Using the cap from an aerosol can squeezed into oval it just pushes over the rear of the camera body. Putting a bit of slack mic cable into the cap first and allowing the cable be at the bottom saves all the aggro of making a hole in the cap just for the mic cable. OK so it's not waterproof but then again neither is the expensive Drift silicone one - as they readily state.

Yet to be field tested I have hopes that it will not be forced off by wind pressure - but if it does then at least it wont damage the mic cable and another cap is easy to find anyhow. (Carry a spare?) Hopefully this will give some protection from the worst of the weather if you cant stop straightaway to remove the camera . Also a similar cap can used on the front of the camera to protect the lens when the camera is in the tank top bag or wherever you keep it when not in use.

That's quite a good idea if it works. I'll give both a go. I would put One on the front though, don't the top of the aerosol lids has a bit that sticks out in the centre where they have be injection moulded, this makes a lump on the inside and could scratch the lens.

Have found these caps to vary quite a lot in height

The one on the lft is 55 mm tall and the right hand one is 45 mm tall. Keeping in mind that the caps don't have to be fully pushed on then all should be well. When using the 55 mm cap on the front of the camera there is still 10 mm clearance when the cap is pushed on. With a cap on each end the camera just sits nicely in the bum bag that I use when out and about.

I've thought about cutting out a hole i the rear hatch as well. I actually acquired an extra door to experiment with. :ugeek: :ugeek:

Still haven't done it yet though. Now I just ride without the back door because I don't plan on riding with rain or moisture any time soon. If/when I do though, I'll just put the door back on.
