A Recent Video I am Proud of:

We are all aiming to be better, that is why we are here. I struggle on audience retention, so this was a bonus win for me:

That's really good! I read somewhere that 40% AVD is what to aim for, and anything over that is bonus.

I just looked at my channel, and my overall AVD is 36.9%. Some of my longer videos have <20% AVD, but the shorter ones tend to be around 60%.

I'm at 38.2% lifetime, but I also think, the bigger and more your videos get exposed to a larger group, the harder it is to get people to watch whole videos.

It is real hit and miss, I have 2 videos that are very very similar, they were both trip videos, not motovlogs. One has 53% APV, one has 36%. They both have about the same number of views. So it can be a total crap shoot I think. I know AVD and APV both figure into how YT decides to put vids in search order, but I think like anything, you can really only look at some trends, if you have a video do well in any metric, do more of that.

View duration is an interesting metric. I'd imagine it's a bit skewed from people who click on and click off quickly like you see in that first 20 second dip. Good news seems to be that anyone who makes it over that initial minute hurdle seems to stick around, so you know your video isn't turning people off at any given point.

Most of the videos I watch on YouTube are of content creators who do more normal vlogging style, and they are very good at regular cuts and "storytelling" where it feels like 5-6 different "segments" in a 12-16 minute video. That's always been hard to replicate while doing pure motovlogs, but might be something to think about.

There's a reason YouTube Shorts exists now as well.

LOL, almost all of my videos have a line that runs pretty much from 100% at the beginning to 0% at the end, creating a nice little triangle :D My retention is crap, in other words.
