Hi guys/girls

I'm new to the forum, so hi, hope you're all well. So basically, i'm 17 years old living in Sheffield, England, and i'm wanting to do my full bike licence, i believe it's called a mod 1 and 2 (correct me if i am wrong). Before i do the test and pay out £600 upwards, i just want to make sure i can ride the bike i want legally, i.e with a restricter on it. I'm after the new kawasaki ninja 300 when it comes out either this month or the following month, or even early 2013, would this be possible? I need a plain and simple answer because i've gone through and looked at many various websites and not one single website has given me a direct answer and i'm fed up. If someone could clear it up for me i'd be very grateful :)

p.s if i was able to ride the bike with a restricter on, where would i get one from? would the bike shop sell it me and fit it?

Thanks.

Josh.

yep they would sometimes (but not always) fit it for free

I could go into this with considerable detail but there are people on this site that could explain it better in half the words :P its called the A2 restricted license and it changes dramatically late january. Also, the restrictor kit varies between bikes, and you have to get a garage to fit it as you will need to get a certificate of proof to show police/insurance etc

You can have that bike at your age if you do the current bike test before it changes in January, as long as it has a restricter. After January you won't be able too.

The bike shop will sell it.

Good choice in bike by the way!

When I passed my test, i did it when i turned 20, i bought a zzr 600 off ebay and then gave it to my mechanic to put on, so i dont see why a garage wouldnt put one on when they are putting the bike together.. if your buying the bike on finance, i dont see why they wouldnt include the £200 (it was 200 when i got my mechanic to do it) within that.. Basically, with a restrictor, your paying £200 for the certificate, the restrictor is basically just a washer (on older bikes, not too sure about new bikes, varies from maker to maker)...

most the guys answered this already, but thought i'd put in my story lol

Garage doesn't put the bike together. It happens just as you say it, the mechanic (working in the showroom/garage) puts it in if the bike needs it and the customer has asked for it. Although £200 sounds like a lot!

This is whats done when the bike has a carburetor... so yeah, older bikes really.

On newer bikes it varies from just a throttle stop, to actually restricted in the engine

I'm not sure what you mean by "actually restricted in the engine" but a lot of modern fuel injected bikes are restricted at the ECU using a little plug in thingy.

Well any bike up to a 650 (?) as long as it has restricters in keeping it down to 33bhp

yes go for it dude quickly

oh f*ck, 10x more pressure of getting it passed first time. It's stupid the new laws though. I don't want to get a boring sh*tty car, there's no excitement with a car, there's no filtering with a car, it's not the same. I'm currently doing my driving lessons and tbh with you, they're boring and totally not interested in buying a car (not that i'd be able to afford it with the ridiculous insurance prices) i don't know whether i'd be able to get it before jan 13 or whatever, as 1) i probably won't be able to afford it 2) it'd probably take me longer to learn as i'm on a 125 scooter now.

Basically, i'm screwed. Brilliant.

and me only i don't have a working bike

welcome to the forums :)

well I'd say, get the license ASAP as long as you get the license before January the future bikes won't be a problem.

From what I understand about UK licenses (I did mine in France) you still have masses of time to do the license (but still don't hang around)
you can get most bikes restricted, the Ninja 250 doesn't need restricting, you would have to on the 300 though then you can get most 600s and 650s restricted, you could even restrict the Z750 if you love Kawas ( I asked in a Kawa dealer)

hope this helps and hope to see you on the road soon :D

If you are dead set on a Ninja 300, why put yourself under huge pressure to pass before the new laws? If you pass now, you'd have to restrict the bike, and I doubt it'll handle restriction well, as it doesn't have loads of power to begin with.
By passing under the new laws, you have time to get proper training, and ease the pressure on yourself. And when you pass, you have a nice new 39hp bike, and will kick the arse of anyone on a restricted bike.

I hope you get what I mean, I'm never any good at explaining this kind of thing :)

EDIT.
Never listen to a word I say. I know nothing.
