33bhp questions

Get the test done before January! If you wait until the new test comes in you will have to take the test three times to gain a full unrestricted cat A licence. The first test allows you to ride up to 125cc until you are 19, second up to 47bhp and third an unrestricted full licence. There are two years between each of these categories.

Check out this factsheet by the MCIA for more info: http://www.warram.org.uk/docs/3DLD.pdf

So basically, get it done asap! Also, I'd stay away from the Ninja 300, I can't imagine it restricting well saying it doesn't have much power to start with. Look at 600s or sub-33bhp 250s instead.

Hope this helps

As a side-point for all forum members advising people about UK tests, you really need to know exactly what the new test system entails. It is more restricting for new motorcyclists than people seem to think.

Was getting really frustrated and thinking the same thing

Glad you said it, because I can't quote all the things that are wrong on the last page.

I'll also add that I think people need to learn a bit more about restrictions before offering advice on it too. This whole thing about certain bikes restricting better is a little silly. The Ninja 300 would restrict really well down to 33, as it'd only lose 6bhp (I think its 39). You would hardly notice a power drop, unlike when a 60bhp 600 or whatever is restricted.

And the current laws allow for any bike to be restricted to 33bhp. Doesn't have to be 650 or 750 or under or whatever was said in the last page.

I realised that so much of what I said last night was wrong. I'm hereby never giving advice to anyone ever again :P

No man! We all make mistakes. No reason to not give advice again. Like I've said before, just learn from it :)

There is no need to be upset.

roughly how long would it take to pass it? bearing in mind I've only rode a 50 & 125 scooter before so have no idea how to use the gears and clutch etc.

You can never judge how long it will take someone to pass the test, depends on how your riding is, and how it fits in with the 'DSA-style'. Take proper tuition and you can't go much wrong

Fair enough, my mention of restriction was purely based on experiences talking to people who have bought bikes close to 33bhp and haven't really liked them. I'm no engineer!

Totally understandable! Absolutely see where you're coming from, but the simple thing is the lower your BHP is on your bike already the less you'll have to restrict it and the closer to the full power you'll actually feel. It's maths really :)

Hopefully that makes some sense...

i shall pm roadcraft and see if he will come here

If you want, but it seems all the questions have been answered.

He needs to do the test before January to still sit in the 33bhp law and get the Ninja 300 with a restriction, and there is no way of knowing how long it'll take him to pass.

basically what i'm trying to say is, would it be realistic and achievable?

Yes, it is certainly possible. If you get professional tuition I can't see any reason why you can't pass before January.

how much is the whole thing by the way? is it around the £600 mark? I just don't want to pay out all this money for me to go over january, it'd be so depressing.. lol

Theory test: £31

Module One: £15

Module Two: £75

You will need to contact your local training school for prices, in my experience they differ greatly!

Hope this helps :-)
