2015 New Mics?????

I just ordered an Audio Technica ATR3350; looking forward to what it'll do for my vlogs.. Not looking forward to the 20ft of cord that comes with it lol

It's the extra battery hassle and not knowing how much battery life is left that would really bother me.

The long cable is a 5 minute fix for all but the most cack handed of folk.

Yeah. It apparently has short battery life too, like ~20 hours. I think I'm going to replace it on schedule every two weeks or so. I might shorten the wire; my soldering skills aren't necessarily the greatest, though.

Yeah that battery life and no battery level is a bad mix.

Just out of curiosity and not to be presumptuous, does everyone know the difference between polar (pickup) patterns on mics, and how placement can and should be dictated by that pattern? I am a hobbyist recordist, so I have a little knowledge on the subject of microphones if anyone is curious.

I did some research, and what I figured was that we should use cardioid mics since they can be positioned to hear your voice instead of the noise of the wind.

I have two mics, and they're both omnidirectional, but the Sony has two mics and no battery. The end result is more wind noise.

I have looked for cardioid mics that have the 1/8" (3.5mm) connection, but most have the four pin connectors.

This one looks promising, and it looks like it should work with my Tascam DR-07 Mark II. I may get it sometime over the summer.

I'd love any advice for reducing wind noise. I have windscreens, dead kitties, and am currently using the nitrile glove mod... but I put some slits in the end where the mic picks up sound. It was a bit muffled without those slits.

I would agree that cardioid is a good choice for a helmet microphone. The off axis rejection means that when you point the backside toward the noise, (i.e. wind) it won't pick it up as much. What I didn't know is how difficult it is to find a dynamic cardioid pattern lavalier mic with a 3.5mm plug.

Yep, it was a pain in the bum setting that up on my Zoom H2N!

I received my new audio technica 3350 yesterday, and the quality of it is phenomenal. I just have to find a good place to mount it in my helmet so you can't hear my breathing.
