November 23, 2011 - Roof Helmets may be one of the least known motorcycle manufacturers in the world.

The French company has had quite an impact on motorcycle helmet design, however, with products like the ahead-of-its-time Roof Boxer (review).

The Boxer's unique design, which allows the chin bar to be rotated all the way to the rear, was a first in the industry.

The helmet is designed to wear with the rotating chin bar all the way back or with it down in the full locked position.

And here's another first: the original Roof Boxer was, as far as I know, the only flip-up helmet to pass the Snell testing regime. We reported on this several years ago after my "sworn to secrecy" pledge expired.

I wouldn't ride with a helmet that has the option for the chin bar to be moved.

Full Face Only.

I have a flip up helmet, it's solid as a rock mate, SOLID. AS. A. ROCK. :P

Have you crashed in one the same though? I don't really see the point of a flip up, I won't have it up when I'm riding, if I stop for any length of time I'll take it off and if it's a quick stop I'll sweat it out. The main job of a helmet is to protect you in a crash and personally, though possibly wrongly, I think that a full face will do the job better.

Yeah I agree with the full face argument, but also think a lot of it is psychological and a mental perspective. Regardless if a flip up has the same safety ratings, I will always feel more comfortable with a full face.

I ride with a flip up. Sharp now rate flips for the likelihood for the chin bar to open on impact .

Reasons for having one.

1. As a spectacles wearer, they are bloody awesome, no screwing up my expensive glasses by cramming the in a tiny porthole.

2. Makes life easier in shops and garages.

3. They work well, compare favourably to full face protection and are loads better than a 3/4 or open face helmet.

It if passes the same safety tests with the chinbar locked down as a fixed chinbar, that's fine by me.

I wouldn't ride with the chin piece up, but I use my motorcycle for running errands, and even for grabbing snacks at the drivethrough. Its annoying trying to talk through my mouthpiece tanking up the bike, at the bank teller, or ordering three soft tacos only to hear "que? three taquitos?"...

Plus, half the time in Houston it is SO HOT, it'd be nice to flip the face up on long stops.

When you put the chinbar to the closed position it snaps shut with a very loud 'clang' as the mechanism locks it firmly in place. To me it feels as solid as a full face helmet, but hey, each to their own and all that.
You don't know what you're missing though, ever had to sneeze while riding? Just flip up the chinbar. Same problem in a full face... messy

So your buying it on practicality? Not saftey?

I'd rather take an extra 12seconds to take off my helmet. & if I'm going to a 'Drive Through' I.e Macdonalds I'll plan to go in side.

Those helmets would make me feel disabled. I do have hands so I'd rather flip the visor myself.
I hate robot technology.

I don't think it's electronic, I just think they have wired it up to show you what happens. Saves somebody standing there and have to repeat it every 5minutes.

Well if they pass safety tests ............ I prefer the front flip style, Although they look too "Attention Whore" for me to buy one.

Just figured if I can have safety WITH practicality, all the better. :)

Well said!

Well you should see my one, it's plain white and probably the most boring looking helmet ever to have left a helmet factory. (Note the helmet I'm wearing in the picture on the left is my old full face helmet).

GpzDave , you may have miss understood me , or perhaps the way I wrote it. I meant I prefer font flip lids , I have a caberg trip (I love it). the roof helmets with the extreme styling seem a bit show off IMO .:)
