I'm sure you would get pretty pissed off if someone copied one of your videos and profited from it without telling you and giving you a cut.

People keep saying this, but i dont really understand it. Especially on youtube. Youtube advertising is (currently) effectively endless. If my video is taken by someone else, and they monetise it, I loose nothing. In fact, I may make extra if people watch it there, then come looking for the original. And music on youtube... how many people ask "what song is that?" and then go and buy it once they know. Its like free advertising.
I think people in general are just a bit greedy. Think about how Justin Beiber has made $100m, his record label probably made 10x that and then they go ballistic because someone bought the music and used it on a youtube video to make $8. This jelousy/powerhunger, or what ever it is, is what starts wars.
P.S. feel free to exploit any of my footage (although I doubt it will make you anything).

Hmmm... sorry for the thread hijack, but I didnt start it!

I get what you're saying and I agree to a certain extent. I think they should allow their music to be used in videos as long as a link is provided for people to buy the song. A lot of music labels do that already which is why sometimes you'll see itunes and amazon links below the video. Ironically I actually work for one of the companies that doesn't allow that. It irritates the shit out of me because they're constantly bitching about money and laying people off but they're missing out on a major revenue stream.

What you shouldn't be allowed to do though is use music and monetize the video. By doing that you're getting for free what big movie producers have to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for. The music labels can't really justify charging usage fees to movie producers if they let the average joe with a camcorder use the same music for free.

If you want to use music the best thing to do is search for the song you want to use on Youtube. If you see it on Youtube and it's been there a while go ahead and use it, especially if it has an itunes link under it. Those are the songs owned by the labels that have allowed Youtube to use their content as long as they provide download links. Just don't monetize those and don't be surprised if later it gets taken down when the label's agreement with Youtube ends or changes.
