My $160 Setup Matches A $600 Go Pro Hero 4 Set-up!

Due to people messaging me on youtube trying to find out about my set-up, here it is!

Before i started motovlogging, i did tons of research on what camera I should buy. Due to the fact that I was on a tight budget, it came down to a Go Pro Hero 3 vs the Sony HDR AS15. After much thought and testing, I went ahead with the Sony AS15 due to the fact that it costs half of what a Hero 3 costs and that sony is still releasing firmware updates like now i can record a 1080p 60fps.

I purchased the Sony Skeleton Frame in order to get a side mount on my helemet and i attached it to a go pro tripod mount to a go pro J mount to the side of my helmet.

The microphone I use is the Sony ECM CS3 lapel mic that you can find on ebay for just $20. NEVER had a problem with it, it runs comfortably inside my helmet liner and comes out by the back of my helmet.

Check out my full review in the video below! :)

There are plenty of lower cost alternatives...It comes down to whether the GoPro is worth the $ to you...For me yes..

very very true, if i had the money for a go pro3/4, i wouldnt hesitate to get one, since its a much newer camera than the Sony AS15 and has overall better features than it. But the fact that for $100 less you can get "almost" the same quality as the hero 3, it beat me to it. Remember guys, all the builds are personal preferences and what catches your eye :)

Good man for the Sony ;) . They do a pretty good job on keeping firmware updated :) . That's the route I took with my camera - a used AS10 :p . I'd rather spend the money on my bike instead of an overpriced camera :p heh~.....

Getting creative is what filming is all about! Finding a less expensive route is a lot more respectable than asking people for money IMO!

I have been on the sony actioncam bandwagon since day one myself. Used it for my POV CarVlogs I started out with, and now it's the camera that records my face in my later CarVlogs. The newer HDR-AS100V has a higher bitrate and thus even better and crisper 1080p footage, but I did have an issue with it that required replacement twice. First with an artifact inside the lens, second time the on and off button stopped working. After that replacement it worked great, so I guess Sony revised the button to work better.

That HDR-AS15 though. Like I mentioned I still got mine, and it's still going strong.

I'm planning to upgrade to an 100 this summer... once that happens, my 10 may get rearview shots instead ;) ~

I am thinking about dropping coin on that 1000... 4k footage! I am thinking the 4K as a dashcam (more zoom, but I loose that 60 frames per second for an awesome slomo) and the 100 for my face. And then the 15 as a back-up cam. Perhaps find a mounting solution for rearward facing. I got tint on my windows, so I can't use the suction cup without ruining that over time.

And by the time they can you will have far better cameras available for cheaper. There's no such thing as future proofing here.
But what kind of storage space do you need for all of that  ??? Even the larger of the hard drives would be iffy me thinks :p ~

Fair point about using 4K for the zoom though
Yup, and that is the sole reason why I would be using it. Uploading in 4k would be a waste of time. Not many folk can play it, and the time it would take to upload? I am already uploading at night when I am asleep. It takes 3-4 hours now. The same in 4k would probably take all night. No thanks! Hahaha!

I answered my own question... if you didn't read it right the first time, read it a second time >_> meh~.....

I use the Sony AS100v. It's as good or better than any GoPro options. I eventually want to upgrade to the new 4k version so I can use the 100 for alternate shots. The image stabilization on my 100 is pretty damn good.

Btw, I don't use those joints with my cage. I mount the cage directly to the helmet puck with
3MDual Lock™ Reclosable Fasteners
holding it all onto the helmet. Tested to 160+ with zero issues.

I just wish the 100 was black like the 15 and 30.

Oh, and the 100 has a stereo mic input so you can split off whatever audio sources you want. I'm currently experimenting with binaural audio using two mono mics. Sounds weird actually hearing stereo surround.
