Zoom Alternatives

My Drift HD 1080 has a gap of about 4 seconds as it transitions between clips. Which in the Vlogging world can ruin an entire section of video if it switches at the wrong time! It's unlikely I know, but it has happened.

My Drift HD170 on the other hand is seamless.

But further to that, I have the HD and 2 HD170's hooked up to one remote. So when I push record, they all start together... sort of. The 2 HD170's start instantaneously while the HD kicks in about 4 seconds later! Very annoying! It's the same with stopping the recording.

That makes those cameras completely worthless!

if i record with several cameras, i still go with the audio from just one, hard enough to get the timing right :)

Beep you horn at the start of your recording, align the sound in your editor and then group all the clips so your cuts stay in sync.

So in all this have we found a viable alternative to the Zoom on a balance of quality and price?! :)

If you want both ambient noise and a mic recording at the same time on separate channels, there's no other option I'm aware of.

What about just an ambient noise one? Getting happier with the camera audio on this new helmet now I've tweaked a little EQ on the vid.

Sadly a discontinued product. Handy thing to take fewer devices with you, but I can't tie my iPhone up as a recorder as I use it as GPS and for telecommunicatiions too. Plus when it rings it will probably interrupt and screw up the recording (I'm guessing).

thanks for that! Any ideas about the H1? Looks like it would do the job just fine, looks a bit odd though

The biggest disadvantage with the H1 is that you can't record simultaneously the external sound and the mic. If you only want the mic audio just buy an olympus recorder for a fraction of the price.

The biggest advantage of the H2N is that it records 4 channels at once, which no cheaper alternative seems to do, enabling you to have a stereo mic channel and a stereo ambient sound channel to mix in editing.

thank you very much for this, i want both, right now i have two mics connected to the drift, one in my helmet and one in my jacket. Works ok but I'm looking for better ambient audio at some point.

I too used to record via an app on my iPhone5s worked a bloody treat as you can hear in EP2 on my channel but it was just too unpredictable.....I'd be talking away for about an hour and then realise it had stopped recording as my man tits had accessed my iTunes via the swipe up menu! Very frustrating so zoom H1 for me with a lav mic from audio technica and an ultradisk mic on the way
