back home people wave and i used to do as well
but here in japan they neither wave nor nod

as someone said above, left side of the road u nod cause its akward across the body and u don t take the right of the throttle. but here in japan they don t even nod. kinda sad tho

in the twisty mountains i ve seen the odd nod but usually to late too respond

I found that I would often get nods in my own area (Suita-shi) but probably because I was known around there. You're right though about other areas, it's generally quiet.

Suita is in Osaka. Famous for Taiyo no To (太陽の塔) Tower of the Sun at Bampaku kinen koen (万博記念公園) where the 1970 World Expo was held.

Delivery bike riders give the best wave/nods back. they are just happy to be noticed

When I first started riding, I had no idea what the nod was about.

I thought they were trying to tell me something was wrong with my lights or something!
After a google, I realised they were saying hello and I felt a right dickwad after for not greeting them back.

Theres always a nice rider who greets me on my way home from work, cheers me right up!

Very few bikers nod around here, it is all about the wave. I wave to anyone (sport bikes, cruisers, dual sports, scooters etc.), but I do nod if waving is not an option at that specific moment.

I always nod and the only time I don't is if miss the other rider. I try to nod to everyone but from my experience nodding to Scooters never receives a reciprocal nod in return -sad face-.

I'm a scooter rider and I nod or wave to everyone. Really seems to piss some off - they get agitated and nod back right at the last moment, or just stare straight ahead and completely ignore my presence.

But there's one guy I see every bloody day coming the other way, and I nod every day, and he NEVER nods back. I don;t know if he thinks I just have a tick, or is ignoring me, or is just completely unaware what the nod is. It's hilarious - but I'm going to continue. I might even wave, very conspicuously soon.

The bit that I find difficult is someone coming up from behind. I often move over a little to let them go, but not sure how to acknowledge. Any advice?

While casually riding in my city I don't nod or wave to anybody. I have yet to see a biker worth a nod.
I'm very discriminative and elitist towards other riders because of the way they ride or the gear they don't wear. Even if it's the law here to wear a helmet, nobody does. Let alone gloves or a jacket.
They all give a bad image to motorcyclists and are the reason they pass ridiculous laws to make owning a motorcycle or riding in the streets more cumbersome for all and more expensive in insurance and taxes.
When I'm on a trip out of the city I tend to be more relaxed and wave to select riders if they, at least, have a helmet and a proper jacket. It's not usual to get a wave here so very few know how to react and wave back. Most of the time they don't wave back but I don't feel bad or awkward because people here aren't used to that.

The thing I hate is when your using the front break and coming to a stop and someone waves at you. I don't want to let go of the break and go into the intersection, but neither do I want to look rude.
