So, with the off season upon us, I've been looking at ways to diversify my content. See, I'm a giant nerd, and have been involved in several nerd related podcasts. It's a huge part of who I am. My motovlogs get a bit dry when I try to keep it moto specific.

So, rattling some ideas with my wife, we came to the idea that it can be done and I need to figure out how. I'm an avid toy collector, pop culture fan, etc. Seriously, I'm looking at my PC tower and it's lit up like a unicorn fart and has a Voltron standing next to the GPU, on a shelf full of Gundam and high end Transformers figures. Lol!

So the idea is to take the Vlog with me when I go toy chasing. I visit some off the wall places, not just the typical Walmarts and Targets. Vintage toy shops, antique shops, etc. I have what my wife has dubbed a PH. D in pop culture and 80's/90's cartoon franchises, and the toys that go with them. Because, well, NERD.

What do you guys think? If you were watching this, what things do you think I could do to keep both groups entertained? What would hook you?

As a motorcycle geek, those two worlds would be cool to combine. I say this because I started a thread years ago asking folks on here what their day job is and most are of a techy line of work. So I bet they got their neat collections too. Why not share yours in combination with riding?

Heck yeah, do it! I've been slowly incorporating Lego content on my channel, and have used my Harley to go pick up several sets. Only 1 video of that collection has been published, but I have a few more in the editing stage.

I think the non-m/c content can really drive engagement and viewership, since it shows your personality and allows you to combine your hobbies. Viewers get the scenery they're used to, but also some new stuff that nobody else [or few people, anyway] is doing.

Always start with the end in mind. What is the end goal for the channel?

Growing something that's a niche within a niche is going to be really hard. Especially if they are both smaller niches.

If you're like, "Dude, lol, I'm not here to make Lambo-money, I just wanna make some fun vlogs, get out on the bike, check out some cool shops." Then rock on, do it for you and for the small group of people who both watch motovlogs and are interested in that stuff.

If you're like, "Hopefully this can grow to the point where I can make some regular money with it and get all kinds of free shit and maybe even some paid reviews." Honestly. I would totally change the approach.

Here's the problem:

motorcyclist vs nerds.png

Out of all of the motorcyclists, we niche down to just the ones who watch motovlogs, and just the ones who like nerd stuff. Then out of all of the nerds we niche down to just the ones who watch vlogs, and just the ones who like motostuff. The little black spot is the cross over between the two, that's your channel's market cap potential. That's as big as it can get. Even if you got a huge slice of that, it would still be a very small slice.

My suggestion is: Don't make it a motovlog that does nerd stuff. Make it a nerd vlog that does motorcycle stuff.

Why? You'll have a hard time convincing the average motorcyclist that peak-nerd stuff, like collectables, is of interest to them.

However, everybody, to some extent, has some interest in motorcycles. Even if they'll never buy one or ride one, a lot of people probably still wish they could just hop on a free motorcycle already knowing how to ride it.

But if you gave a lot of motorcyclists a free nerd collectable thing, they would probably just give it to a kid.

By framing your vlogging around the broader audience, you can still have a vlog that combines your two passions, but it is now catered to a wider audience:

It looks better when it's bigger right?

That’s pretty much the direction I’m thinking. I have a great career so if I never make a dime off the videos, no worries. I’ve done a lot of nerd content over the years, with a smattering of stuff from my day job and a bit from the moto side.
I was going to dip more into being a more moto centric channel, but in hindsight maybe tuning it more towards my nerd side with the Motovlog end being a fun bonus may be the answer.
