I got an email from YouTube tonight, looks like even channels who aren't monetized yet (under 1K subs) will now start getting ads shown on their videos, BUT the creators won't get any of the ad revenue:

  • YouTube's right to monetize: YouTube has the right to monetize all content on the platform and ads may appear on videos from channels not in the YouTube Partner Program.

So expect to start seeing a lot more ads, even on the smaller YT channels, from now on.

Yea pack of mongrels.
As a YT consumer (viewer) I get VERY annoyed by how many ads are on there. I went to watch a 3 minute video and had to watch 15 seconds of ad first and another (skippable) after 5 seconds around 2/3 of the way through.

I didn't think mid rolls were placed on vids shorter than 8 minutes or somit?

I do get annoyed when a video is invaded with ads, have mostly turned off mid-roll ads on my channel, although some of the bike reviews and longer vids have them still.

I should check, if there is a possibility to forbid ads completely. I guess not though, because if I use content that I don't have rights to, yt will still decide for me.

At the end of the day, it is YouTube's toybox so folk using their free platform have to play by their rules :)

You guys can get an ad-blocker on google chrome? Bypass all the ads and straight to the video

Yeah, I won't do that though. I'd rather suffer the ads and let the channel creators earn revenue than rob them of their YouTube money. My way of showing support for channel creators I guess.

So, I understand that they can monetize anything, that is considered to follow ad-friendly guidelines. This means the video can not, among other things contain shocking content, tobacco and firearms related content. So I'm thinking, I could probably agree to promote guns or tobacco in each of my videos, even at the very end, and get away from showing ads :p
Also ‘Controversial issues' which "refers to topics that may be unsettling for our users and are often the result of human tragedy. " Maybe add "controversial issues" tag to each of my videos too? :p

Haha, maybe that's why I don't get views - I'm almost always smokin' a stogie in my vids.

I don't point it out, or highlight it, or suggest anyone else do it. It's just there, 'cause that's who I am.

It used to be that you can opt to not monetize so that no ads will be played. This move however means that even if you don't monetize and/or not opt to allow ads to run when people watch your stuff, YT will still be able to run ads (if they wanted to) when people watch your stuff. If you are not monetized (either you opt not to, or, not eligible), then ad revenue goes solely to YT and zero for you even though you could be getting a few cents, so why not? If you opt to monetize, then YT shares some with you.

Bottom line is, just opt in for monetization, if you are eligible. If you don't, then I'd say that's pretty "un-smart" of you, whatever your reasons may be. You don't get any sainthood points for not doing so. If people don't want to see ads, there's ad blocker and etc stuff people can do to go around it, so let them do that.

I am not sure if I'd be eligible. Probably not. But in any case to me this is still more of a principle. Two things internet has had over TV - no set schedule, you choose what and when you watch; and far less time wasted on ads. Now there is potentially one less thing on this specific portal. This, for me, is enough to look around and see, if I can find better alternatives. I don't think I'll be shutting down my yt channel, but I will be thinking of ways to show my material without ads. If I will find no other satisfactory alternatives during the winter, I might just remake my own homepage to put my videos up there.
We will see how YT treats my channel. Hopefully I am just too insignificant to have ads on my videos at all.

Don't over think the ads bit, whether it is YT placing them, or it is you agreeing to monetize. Stop and have a think on who is paying for the upkeep and maintenance of the infra in which you are being given free access to. Yes, sure YT is making money, again it's a business so obviously there's profit to be made else why would anyone host and manage the infra for free for anyone to use.

If anyone is really against these ads, personally I would say how about setting up your own infra and host your own content, let us know what is the cost and how do you pay to upkeep without any source of income/revenue from it? And that is just for your own content, you haven't even began to open it up to the world for anyone to post stuff up into your infra..

I am not for, and not against, ads. As I said earlier, there's ad block plugins and other methods to get around ads. If people don't want to see ads, they can use those ways to get around them.

Man, I will TAKE the monetization, if and when I get to the required subs and view hours ... if only to pay for more gear!

I've already got about $800 into this venture, with another $500 I'll probably spend today (gonna order a Hero 9 + accessories, about 90% sure of it), and it's a lot of fun - but if it pays for itself, even better!

I agree, I personally don't have one but just a solution if people do not want to see ads at all.

I know it not a popular opinion - but I hate adds and the obsesion to monitizen channels , I think YT was a better place when people did it for the love of doing it and not as a job . I have an add blocker and I suport channels by purchasing merch and giving patreon . I move my patreon cash around every now and then to support new channels .
