I just recorded another vlog today (or thought I did anyways) and the Gopro 7 black instead made about 8 ten second videos that are useless lol. The weird part is that I tested it on a short ride maybe 30 minutes before and it worked fine, no problems. My guess is that it wasn't fully charged, but its just weird that it would shut off periodically rather than shut off once the battery was out completely. Mildly infuriating but I guess I'll try again tomorrow lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone else get a weird tech problem like this before?

The worst camera I have had for tech issues was the 7, mine never worked properly.
I also had a camera issue yesterday, with my Insta360 OneX, it switched on fine and looked to be recording, but when I stopped recording, it got stuck on saving, and corrupted the file.
I often wonder if the tech keeps chasing bigger, better, faster.... that we will always have a beta product, that never works properly, and then just as they get close, they release a new camera and we have to start all over again.
I would love it if manufacturers would test their products before launching them and get them to at least be reliable, then do the firmware updates to improve, not reach the specs they sold the camera on!

I'd check your battery quality, that could explain the issue you described.

I've got two Hero7 Blacks, the 2nd one I bought used as a quick replacement for the 1st one.
The original Hero7 Black that I got, was bought brand new about a year ago. All of the sudden, the camera stopped recognizing the mic adapter. The adapter was fine, worked on an older Hero6. I tried a backup adapter, no dice.
Turns out it's just a quirk that cannot be fixed with a user firmware upgrade or downgrade (or factory reset). That camera is now demoted to 2nd/3rd camera work or just sitting in the drawer.

I recorded numerous videos but made a grave mistake in not checking the content I recorded after the rides. I usually just chuck it on to the storage box until I'm ready to review it. All of those clips just have the default GoPro mic which is useless at any decent speed. I found the point where the camera just stopped using the adapter... no reason for it whatsoever, it just stopped working.

Oh well.

You aren't putting the camera into time lapse mode by accident, are you?

Were the short videos playing speeded up and without sound?

I totally agree with that, especially since it seems GoPro started doing a new camera yearly. They should work on making sure their camera works rather than expecting people to just buy the latest greatest model

I'm hoping it was the battery! That would explain it sincethe test footage was fine literally right before I started the vlog

Nope lol, like I said the test footage from immediately before worked fine. I just hope it is the battery ahaha

not all cards are equal, and specs are often recorded in ideal environments.... there are also a whole heap of fake cards, and some of them even Amazon may sell (unintentionally). But even genuine cards can malfunction, we are asking a lot from such a tiny thing! :)

This actually did it. Turns out there's a list of approved cards for the 7 Black lol (whyy?)
Thanks for following up on this. I've lost a few hours of videos to cheaper cards or maybe even fakes as @HippoDrone mentioned above.

Just in case anyone is looking, the list is here. I'm personally using one SamSung EVO 256gb card and 3 other 128gb/64gb cards from SanDisk, from that list. (Used across Hero8, 7 and 6.)

As a suggestion, there are many fake branded SD cards which are sold online. I use 8 SD cards to record everything I own, and last week I purchased two Sandisks, or Sandisk-likes. When I opened the package, the cover of these two were slightly different, and cards were nearly the same, but the colors were not. I refunded them, and it turrned out, none of those Sandisks were real, they were cheap imitations from Chine or else. As I looked further to this matter, I saw that nearly all of these brands' cards were copied and fake ones were sold with slightly lower prices than the originals.

Definitely a key indicator with the price. I would assume that buying them in a store could be more reliable too - can directly inspect them before buying and reputable stores aren't likely to carry fake china knockoffs.

That's the one!

Side note; I bought a Samsing EVO 64Gb before I saw this list, and that card also works for the Hero7 Black, even though its not on the list. Just in case anyone else didn't want to go for a bigger card.

I have an Evo Plus 128GB in my Hero 5 and it'll drop frames/play up occasionally if I shoot at 4K/24 and above. I only do 2K 48fps so I don't care but just be warned you're on a cusp of card speed

Good to know m80, thanks. I usually shoot 1080p so I should be alright as well. :p
