I've promoted this because I'm a sucker for a video that causes discussion

For those that don't' want to watch the whole lot. Skip to 1:18

I'm going to watch how this thread pans out. I personally think this, although nothing happened - It's very much a 50/50 thing, in my opinion, you were both as bad as each other.

Lets see what others say before I voice my reasons why I think you both caused that near miss

p.s - Check my own threads, I'm not squeaky clean ;)

Rebound, glad to see you're okay. The driver failed to pull out with turn signals, or to see (or care) about you. The same thing nearly happened to me with a van (I plan to show it in my next Vlog). This is the daily risk we face in city environments. I tend to cover my horn before the brakes if I see a wheel turning, or a tail light on a parked car. Can't say I catch or see all of them, but that's the plan.

That exactly why I don't like riding downtown. I used to commute downtown everyday when I rode a sportbike in college and that happens all too often. IR good job keeping an eye out buddy and riding defensively.

Personally, I don't really think the car had a hope in hell of seeing your bike, you changed lanes after the car had committed and the mirrors wouldn't have been able to see you. Am not saying you were in the wrong, I just don't see how the car could have seen you bike from how the vid looked.
Nicely done on keeping your cool with the driver though, it is very easy to get into a rage when you are put in a situation that could hurt you and you handled it nicely.

Pretty much what I was going to say.

As you crossed the intersection, you were behind the row of cars out of sight, and as you moved left, you sped up. Didn't really give the guy a chance to see you.

Accidents in the UK are down to whose "fault" it is. If there's Police involved, they will determine the case of fault should they wish to prosecute, if it involves insurance, they will decide fault, or an amount of fault based on the circumstances.

Couple of things to think about. You can be "right" all you want, but it's cold comfort with broken bones or a broken bike. Also, think about responsibility and your contribution to the accident. They didn't want a collision either, so what more could you have done to have avoided the close call?

Personally, I think getting in lane and assessing what's ahead before hitting the gas would have made thos a video where are car poked it's nose out, and all you said was, "thankfully people sometimes look".

To be fair I don't see a way that the driver could see you in time. You changed lanes rather quickly. Its as much as your fault as the driver's. Just be careful mate :). Most bike related accidents happen in the city.

Im siding with the car driver here. you were behind the SUV, did a quick overtake as they were checking their mirror.. they wouldnt have seen you behind the row of cars..

also that burst of speed, while fun, isnt bright

If I were in the driver's position and used my mirrors, I would have seen the truck at the intersection and not the bike, as I pull out into the lane, you are accelerating towards my direction, to be honest, I don't think I would have noticed you coming, otherwise I would definitely have waited for you to pass before pulling out. Perhaps accelerating through a junction/busy street is not that advisable. As you were swerving to pass the truck in the intersection, your view of the road ahead was blocked by the cars parked along the side, so you probably missed seeing that car in the midst of pulling out. That's just me though. At least no one was hurt. RSSR!

Cross posted on the video itself: Close call, glad no collision happened, but you really have to be the one driving defensively, I don't think he could have seen you with how quick you came up.

I think regardless of fault arguing. I think you could have easily anticipated that a car might pull out from the side in a town street even before you got to the street it's self. You seem to ride expecting that people will see you too. Which I think is more likely to put you in hospital regardless of fault. So maybe be a bit of hazard perception and a riding plan?

Totally agree!!!

Whoever is at fault, we are the ones that will be worst off!!

We just have to access the situation and make the best judgement... (this is where experience helps)

Ride as if everyone can't see you

Totally agreed, I could and should have been riding more defensively and there is a good chance I wasn't seen as a result of how I was riding, but it's very likely the driver didn't spot check either

I obviously anticipated the driver was coming out, or I would likely have made contact with his bumper, I'm very aware we are near invisible (and my riding style in this clip isn't helping matters, I know,)
