Side Mount Or Chin Mount?

I have a gopro hero 4, and a 1st Gen Drift HD. The hero 4 is what I have set up on my helmet at the moment. It's on the right side with the microphone connected and tucked up under the pads and the mic is taped to the front of the mouth area.

The problem I'm having is that I cannot mount the gopro on the front to get that perfect view because my vent literally takes up all of the space.

I'm not sure if I should buy a new helmet, the one I have is a scorpion exo (modular), or if I should just deal with it and keep going forward.

Thanks,
-Scooby

I bought a second hand Drift HD specifically because I wanted a side mounted camera, and the Drift cams look way better mounted that way. I'm sure it's a matter of personal preference, but I think those chin mounted go pro's look... odd, carefully put :p I want my cam to be as subtle as possible, which is why I went with the Drift. Side mounted GoPro's look ridiculous, they stick way out.

A chin mounted cam will give you a slightly better point of view compared to a side mounted cam, but yeah... I don't like how they look.

I was concerned of the view point, and yeah the gopro just sticks out like a sore thumb. I'll have to give the drift a try later on a see how it is. Thanks for the input. You may have changed my mind.

Well, just keep in mind that the Drift HD is getting a bit dated and the quality of the footage is really not up to par with that of newer action cams, especially after uploading to YouTube. It's something I've come to realize after doing a couple of vids.

I have the AGV AX8 EVO and I have a large MX style vent in front and I had pretty much given up on the chin mount. However I was looking at how motonosity did his. He used a gopro front helmet mount and mounted his off to the side with the links wrapping around. After looking at his I'm going to give it a go on my helmet and see how it turns out.

Just watched the video, thanks for posting it. I'm going to order the stuff in the coming weeks once I get the funds. I think that may be my solution.

Chin mount offers the best PoV view, because it's front and center. Side mount feels more like you are peeking from the side of the rider's helmet.

These are my personal opinions about the mounting positions.

I recently learnt about the Replay action camera, looks much slimmer than a Drift and there's an adapter for external mic. Not sure if anyone is using this camera.

I agree I think the chin mount is the best POV. But I also like it because I don't like having a brick catching the wind and constantly dragging my head to one side during long rides. Also I think the chin mount with the black case is much less conspicuous, and thus less gawkers.

I was going to do a chin mount on my new helmet, so i did a quick zip tie temp mount to check the POV. Didnt like it because my tinted windshield is too high and it looks through it rather than over it, so I went with my old side mount POV from my first lid.

Chin mount gives the viewers the most natural view since it is nearish to where their eyes would be. I used to have a side mount on my MX helmet, glad I went with the chin mount on my street helmet for wind resistance too.

This is my setup

This is a personal choice; decide whats best for you and go for it. I would go as far as buying the appropriate helmet just to vlog...

It is more of a personal preference. I personally am rocking the chin mount, because I feel like the side mount give some restrictions for your videos

I have the chin mount but somehow I think my videos would look better if my camera was mounted on the side of the helmet, because it would give a much better view on the bike itself rather than only dials and road :)

I have the Shark S600 helmet and it has that vent on the chin that takes up so much space.

Had to wangle a system combining both the side mount and the chin mount to get the camera dead centre on the chin.
No problems with it....

I have a Sony AS200 side mounted on my HJC CL-17. I "DID" have a good angle on it at first, but cannot get it back. I won't do the camera on top of head and it would not work on the front of helmet. Back to ye olde drawing board.

I too use the AS200 and have it mounted to a go pro mount using a 3/4 adaptor and the Sony helmet mount:

This gives 6 degrees of movement for that perfect angle. Hope it helps, mate.
