Diversifying your income stream is very sensible. A mix of advertising revenue, sponsorship, amazon associates and merchandise means you're not tied to one income source.

I don't make money off youtube, I hate ads, and I don't like shoving products in peoples faces.
I work for my gear and bike, and I don't even know how to monetize videos.
I once did monetize my videos, but I've never got anything.

You didn't get anything because it wasn't linked to a Google AdSense account that actually pumps the ads into your videos.

Monetizing a video on YT just says "We will allow ads on this video, if there is one, it will appear here". But it alone doesn't do anything so even if you did, no ads would have played.

Linking your YT to AdSense will draw the ads from AdSense to the videos to generate hits on AdSense.

Definitely monetize your videos. My channel has paid for my bike, all of my camera equipment, all of my riding gear and then some. However, unless you get really big you're not going to be able to quit your day job. If you want to make money on Youtube do something else. I have other channels that I've just recently started that I can already tell are going to make me a lot more money than my motovlogging channel is ever likely to.

It looks like I need an AdSense account for it, but I can't link my wordpress blog to the adsense request page.
Anyways, I don't like to monetize my vids and/or put annoying ads in it. The only thing I'd do in the future is Amazon Associates.
