This is what I just picked up to start with, but I'm sure there is much better microphones.

Any schematics on how you did that?
I actually made a video about it, but some of the footage was damaged so it was never finished.

Basically, the Sena wired mic has two wires: ground and signal. If using a mono 1/8"/3.5mm plug, the signal is wired to the tip and the ground to the larger ring at the base of the plug. If using a stereo 1/8"/3.5mm plug, you can wire the signal to the tip and middle ring for dual mono audio, and the ground to the base as usual. Or, you can just use the tip for a mono signal.

The GoPro audio adapter cable is stereo, so I used a stereo jack and wired it dual mono.

I used this as a guide to wire my custom GoPro audio adapter. http://chargeconverter.com/blog/?p=130. Connect pins 4 and 5 using a resistor over 300k (I used 390k). Left and Right audio signals go to pins 6 and 7, and pin 5 is ground for the mic. I used a 90* angled USB plug from eBay and just pulled out the pins I wasn't going to use.

Okay thank you

You can also get adapters for any 3.5mm mic for the GoPro, either GoPros own or 3rd party from ebay. If you go with the latter, make sure the cable is for 3, 3+ and 4, not just GoPro, as there is a difference. They had 5pin USBs on the 1 and 2, but 10 pin on the newer ones. You can identify 10pin USBs by the presence of 2 connector plates inside the plug.

I have yet to see how it works in action myseøf, but I hear that a 2$ mic from dealextreme might work decently in the beginning.

VERIFY the pinout mentioned here. I bought two listed as compatible with 3 and 3+ and neither worked. Both were 5-pin. I ended up making my own.

Added a picture, this is how a 10-pin plug looks, the 5-pin plugs will be useless for anything but power and data transfer.

I've tried buying the imitation adapters which didn't work. To save the hassle just get the original GoPro Hero USB microphone adapter. As for which microphone to get, I don't really know.. I just use the huge Sony ECM DS70P one. They have a smaller one (ECM-CS3) though. Not cheap.

I have hero 4 silvet and Ive just started using the go pro 3.5mm adapter and a ebay mic and works great. I did have a direct usb mic but it wasnt real good.

I use the Rode Smartlav + mic with the go pro adapter and the Rode TSSR to TSR adapter (the mic is designed to be plugged directly into a smart phone for recording but the adapter lets it go through a video recorder ie go pro).

Rode Smartlav + was $59.00
Go Pro Adapter was $35.00
Rode TSSR to TSR 3.5mm Adapter was $13.00

Works like an absolute charm and not a single hiccup yet.
