So I believe Youtube are beginning to charge for subscriptions approximately 2 dollars a sub. I believe next week they are bringing it in for 10 new channels. Personally I think that's ridiculous and will kill Youtube what do use guys think?

Honestly, I think it's a lot of hoopla over nothing. As I understand it, channels have to request to be paid subscriptions and those are likely to be the biggest and most popular channels only. Normal users won't be affected and it's likely those that do charge will have their following significantly reduced.

I'd issue tin foil hats to everyone that worried about this if I had the money

I also see this happening for big station type channels where people would usually pay on TV to have a channel...that type of thing. Maybe there will be like an "HBO" type channel or something.

Exactly as Toast says, it'll be a new form of pay per view tv.

I know of a YouTuber with 2,000,000 subscribers who says a similar thing.

Machinima will turn their MachinimaPrime channel to pay for subscription... my prediction.
I think we will see new commercial television shows move to youtube. Its just youtubes way of slowly killing off television. I think it will be good.

lol, i DID say slowly!
Maybe maybe not. I dont watch television. I think as soon as decent internet speeds are available to every house, tv will quickly fade. Considering in 15 years we have gone from no internet to this, I'll give it another 10 and the internet will stream all media. Companies like youtube are ahead in the game and plan to stay that way.

Internet is already fast enough, it's YT that can't keep up. Their stream is never any faster than about 5% of my maximum download speed, which I see all the time with torrents. I'm sure one day it will happen, but it's atleast 15-20 years away. They're going to have to get a lot closer to functioning in the manner that my DVR does, with the same speed, ease of use, and frankly video quality. Then there's the 'old people' issue. I kinda wonder how we'll feel about new tech in 20-30 years, if we'll be as cantankerous with it as our parents are right now.

It's giving channel owners the *ability* to charge subscription fees. Some channels are have a large staff and pretty high production values in their videos. I will gladly support the GeekandSundry channel if/when they start charging. :)

I think the average motovlogger would find themselves short on viewers if they charged. Even the top ones would lose out on quite a few subscribers.

But again, it's an option given to the channel owner.

As far as taking over TV, I cancelled my cable subscription a few years ago and I don't have an antennae to receive OTA signals which leaves me with the internet. I have Netflix for TV/movie type stuff.. and youtube. The revolution is well under way. :)

I've successfully talked almost a dozen people into canceling their cable tv in favor of internet and Netflix only. The time for viewer power is here now... this will just be another way to let us pay for the content we really want instead of paying for packages of utter crap that we watch less than 1% of.

Well they will hopefully shoot themselves in the head and stop trying to take over youtube.

Well i can see this killing a lot of channels if they made so you cant watch them without paying. lets face it not many people go on youtube thinking of paying directly for it.

I dont think it will impact on most channels. YT's paid subscription service will simply be used for things like a David Attenborough film broadcast on YT instead of TV.

But for smaller channels...it all depends on their marketing. You watch, I can imagine someone like AB just posting motovlogs as usual but dropping teasers for an adventure ride then having a second channel for the particular trip and having a fee to watch it. Like Ewan McGregor doing motovlogs then making "the long way round" and charging a fee for people to watch. Like Machinima showing vids as usual and then using Prime for longer, more expensive to make, well edited movies and charging a fee.

These channels will do well out of it if they make a movie and charge people $1
