Site owner, lovely and adorable
Just an idea!

We are all promo whores - We likes subs, we like views and we like discussion!

How does this sound? I think this is a nice way of back scratching?

Every month we email out the latest or top threads, this gets sent to all members (unless they opt out)

I'm thinking of flipping that on it's head a little bit....

How about this

If ANYONE adds a mention/link within their videos to Motovlog.com then we will add that video to the mailing list etc. Have something like 'top 5 videos of January every month.

I think thats a really good idea, however, I don't want to send out every single video that mentions us(some will cheat). I don't want to receive emails like that, I don't want to send emails like that either.

In your opinion how we can try and have something that helps each other out?

Say, the 'offer' is only valid for members who have;

  • Been with us for over 30 days
  • Have at least 50 posts (post your videos do not count)
  • Have to have 10 new posts per month to qualify
How would that sound?

I dont think I can handle this much conversation:p

lol well you have over 50 posts and you've just done two ;)

Main thing is to stop people signing up just to try getting exposure. I'm happy to help others, if they're happy t help the forum

If you really want to drive traffic to the site how about having an actual web page and not just a forum. Then you can have featured vloggers in the sidebar of the site. The featured vloggers can be people that contribute to the web site in some way, for example making an article about microphone placement, etc. Then again you could do that with the forum if you don't want to bother with a full web site.

Me personally, I would probably not take the time to read a monthly email and I would probably opt out. I get too many emails and would probably miss it most of the time even if it did interest me.

Articles would turn a spam fest and it would end up dormant. Plus they're time consuming

This is an idea about helping out members gain popularity for themselves but making sure people don't spam the forum because they think they can get something for nothing

I wasn't implying that you should make it a free for all. Maybe people could post how to videos or articles on the forums and if you like them you could offer to feature it on the web site. You pay the bill so ultimately it's up to you. It would be a lot of work so it may not be worth your time.

Honestly for a long time I've felt like this place was nothing more than a forum for people to yell, "Hey, look at me!" There's rarely any helpful info for motovloggers here. I've always felt it should be a helpful tool for motovloggers and not just another place to spam with your videos.

Oh well, even if you don't like my idea it's still nice to finally see someone running it that wants to make something out of place.

I like this. weather is starting to break where I am so I can actually start getting some vlogs out there! Ill make sure to put the clips promoting the site in as well
=]

How will this be rated? By views? Because that wouldn't do any good to the channels with fewer subs. Rated by responses to the video thread? Again, not much good with fewer subs.

I think a good way would be a percentage of views to subscribers - if someone has 50k subs and only 5k views, that's 10% watching. If the next one has 300 subs and a 100 views, that 33%. Yeah it gives the smaller subscriber base a statistical advantage, but they deserve it.

Then as the smaller channel grows, it makes way for smaller channels to get promoted as their percentages start to drop.

That's my two cents anyhows, but I've got a headache and can't really think straight, so there may be issues with that idea.

Also, I think it would be better to have "top 5 videos of January" just for the month of January, and for February, you could have "top 5 videos of February" and for March you could have "top 5 videos of March" and so on and so forth. I think the 5 videos of January would get stale and irrelevant as the year progresses. /s :P

Maybe we could have challenges or themes and/or specific styles of videos for each month. Then we could vote our favourite videos on the forum, with out counting views/subs so that if you make a good and relevant to the topic video you can be featured. This would stop people that have 10 subs and 7 views (70% watching) from entering.

I'm all for helping out smaller channels (like mine ;) ) but I think it would benefit us all better if we had more popular people features, if they grow we should grow to! :)

That's a good idea

However its done, it won't be using YouTube likes or view as a measuring tool

do you have a rough idea of how it will be done?
or r we just putting it out there to see if people agree and then doing all the thinking afterwards

So I'm not terribly sure what you want to gain from this?
If you're doing a mailing list then people getting it are already here as members. That's kind of a waste of time if your goal is to get more traffic or members.

My suggestion would be this:
Instead of a mailing list, make another "discussion area" (I can't think of the word. Not another forum but another section) of featured videos. Use your same criteria as the requirements for consideration. Then decide on the featured video(s) and post it/them. It could be a section titled "Motovlog's Top Picks" and a post titled "Top motovlogs for January 2014" and you have the videos in it.

Perhaps vloggers could mention motovlog.com as well as it's section for featured motovlogs. This could get new traffic to your site should someone want to discover new motovloggers. They'd have a nice section to visit, you could put ads in there if that's your goal or whatever you want to do.

A content management site built through wordpress or something could work pretty well. Giving the right control rights to the right people. Like allowing people to become authors that can write posts and such, but has to get an admins approval.

But I dont see anything but positives from the op's idea.
