I am debating on a 2012 FZ6R or a 2012 Ninja 650. I love the inline 4 sound of the yamaha and the look of the bike, the only thing the ninja has that I like better is the front end, the headlights on the yamaha are ugly when compared to the ninja front end. I am just wanting something with a SS look but a ''sit up'' kind of ride, no more leaning forward on the tank. plus I want cheaper insurance than a zx10r haha, which one in your guys opinion is the most reliable and smoother riding? The reason I ask is cuz so many of my friends have told me that yamaha is crap, I have never owned a yamaha but from what I have read they seem to be pretty good bikes. this is the only reason I am even considering a ninja 650, because IMO, the FZ6R wins on everything. (except headlights) haha

Just picked up the Ninja 650's naked doppelganger, the ER-6N. Love it.

The nice thing about the parallel twin 650 is that it's a half-decent compromise between the IL4 and a V-twin. It's smoother than a V-twin, but with more low- and mid-range torque than an IL4.

I put 100 miles on today, almost all of it on the Interstate at around 80mph and the bike just purred. I imagine the fully faired Ninja would be even smoother. I like the wind blasting me, though. :D

Yamahas are great engines, too. Everyone I've met who has a Fazer absolutely raves about it. I'd say test ride both and make your choice then. You really can't go wrong either way. I went with the Kawi due to ergonomics primarily, engine configuration secondly, cost thirdly (including cheaper insurance with the naked ER6 versus the Fazer, which my insurance company considers a "sportbike"), and... well, third is also tied with looks. Like you, I'm just not taken with the FZ6's cosmetics.

You may really like the smoothness of the IL4, though, especially if that's what you're used to. I'm used to a torquey single, so the twin was, to me, "incredibly smooth." LOL

Test ride.

Yea im not really into naked bikes, although I saw the video you posted of your new bike, I like it, What insurance you have? I have nationwide, im hoping they will give me a multi vehicle discount seeing as though I have 7 vehicles insured by them

Yeah, it's the same engine as the Ninja, so I thought I'd at least let you know how the motor feels. I do love naked bikes. To each his/her own. That's why there are so many different bikes. :)

I have American Family. I do get a multi-vehicle discount. Two motorcycles with full coverage and the lowest possible deductible is about $650/year. Not bad, not bad.

I have the half naked UK equivalent of the FZ6R and it's very smooth. Munches miles easily, very easy to ride and confidence inspiring. It's a very neutral bike though, it's not that full of character.

I didnt ride them, but I sat on a ninja 650 and a fz6 and the fz seems so much more comfy and more rider friendly, the ninja (although im a hardcore kawi fan) felt cheap and fragile and just overall crap to me. but my friends are begging me not to get a yamaha because they say it will be broke more than I ride it. I guess my question basically should have just said ''How reliable are yamaha products'' cuz that really all I want to know

Thanks for the feedback man.

I've had mine a year and put over 6000 miles on it and it's been fine. My chain's gone a bit rusty because I haven't been able to look after it properly but apart from that it looks near new. Obviously I don't know how it'll fare a couple years down the line, but the engine is a tried and tested R6 lump so there shouldn't be any issues with it.

I used to own a 2009 Ninja 650R... great bike, very comfortable and nothing can beat it's looks on that category. That motorbike is just gorgeous :) Insurance was also very affordable. So, it's a thumbs up for the Ninja if you ask me.

I ride the er-6f / Ninja 650r and I do love it for a few reasons. Cheap to run, good mileage as long as you don't go racing away from the lights etc, very cheap insurance and I find it very comfy and being 6ft one of the few bikes in the price range I don't feel my legs too tucked under me and if its legal to filter where you are its great for that with it's slim profile.

Things I don't like is the gearbox, no matter how I change gears I don't get a clunk but a solid click on changes its as another rider puts it a bit mechanical.

But like you I love the looks and the new 2012 range has updated the rear end but sadly still standard shocks.

Mods worth considering NONE, (bar a tank protector) I would save the money for your next bike ;)

Optional extras worth considering though are ABS, its saved my arse big time recently!

If you want to keep the Super Sport feel get the FZ6 Fazer, the FZ6R is down on power and is heavier, however they don't make the FZ6 anymore so you can't buy it new, you could look at the FZ8.

Your friends are spewing forth.......

Both brands are fine - pick the bike that works for you!

I dont care about the lower power and top speed haha I just like to ride. IMO fz8 is ugly..just my opinion though. I never herd of the Fazer, I saw it on youtube but I just figured it was the same bike

Thanks for all the feedback guys

I've ridden both. They're very similar when you're sitting on them. Pick the one that makes you horny when you look at it.

The only bad thing I have to say about the Yamaha is that it's hard to find aftermarket parts for it. The Ninja is more popular so it shouldn't have that problem.

Yea, I was also told insurance on the 650 would be cheaper than the fz6r..is that true? and how so? its more cc...must just be the IL4 vs 2 cylinder?

I'd have thrown the new Honda CBR600F into that equation, but did I hear right in that's not available in the US? Ignore me if it doesn't.

Yamaha tend to get a bad rep because they haven't put a lot of new stuff into their bikes and their prices are a little high because they've suffered a lot financially over the last couple of years (Tsunami effect?). That's not to say that their bikes are crap as your mates suggest - it's just they haven't developed as much as some others in some areas - the bikes were great 2-3 years ago, so they're still great bikes afaik...

They new model is not available in the US, and it's a bit more powerful (around 30bhp more) than the other two with a lot more higher up the revs and lot less lower down.
I wouldn't really class them in the same group anyway, but that's just me.
