I have no idea how the magic dice rolls work at Google, but at only 256 out of the 500 subs needed for a custom URL I've just been given mine.

Now I don't have to worry about someone nicking it

The old "user" URLs for old channels are different to the new "c" or "channel" ones as they changed the way it works early this year.

I think I'm going to buy a domain and go that route for getting a custom url. The one they are offering me right now will be pretty long, if I buy a domain hopefully I can get a shorter one.

They keep changing the rules all the time. Very recently it was a 500 sub minimum limit to get it.

Yeah now if you link your website and verify your account you can get a custom url. It's not too difficult.
