Winter - Gritty/Salty Roads

Pulled out of work and managed to lock up my front wheel at the first set of lights, i was only going about 25mph and left plenty of time to break but the gritty surface combined with a small bump in the road caused my front wheel to lock and i skidded a bit. I have never locked a wheel before so it took me a moment to figure it out after i pulled over but lucky i didnt drop the bike and wasnt going too fast. Glad i had my first lock at low speed where the bike was slightly more controllable. Just wanted to share this experience to remind others (especially other begginers like myself) that it doesnt have to be wet or icey for what appears to be a 'clean' road to be slippy. Im happy this happened today as it's reminded me to take extra care during these next few months.

As bad as it feels your front wheel would only have locked up for about 2 or 3cm, it feels like more I know.

Last year when I was riding to work in the snow I felt the back end slide to the right and when I stoped and go back I must have moved about 4cm of snow if that.

Take it easy, if you can walk or public transport, Grit/Salt is pretty bad for the engine, yes you have fairin but your front and rear wheel don't half kick up some grit.

Ride safe man, you're lucky you didn't dump it with a loss of the front wheel, it's normally game over in that case.

Back wheel skidding is manageable but front is normally tarmac time.

I went to an advanced winter skills riding day at Millbrook proving ground. I crashed.

erm.

Well, it was the hottest October on record, I was turning tighter circles than the natural turning circle of my bike, and the engine got hotter and hotter, and the biting point of my clutch changed, and I stalled and it spat me off, to the general amusement of my friends.

Didn't get it on film, cos they ban cameras on account of all the boring cages being tested on the tracks, or something.
