Why I Chose A 600cc

I feel as if everyone that buys a supersport as their first motorcycle has the same excuses as to why they chose the bike they did. Many say that they want to buy a bike that will last them a long time, but I believe that a lot of fun in motorcycling is owning and experiencing different motorcycles throughout your motorcycling career. Also, I honestly don't believe you know what kind of motorcycle you enjoy riding the most until you have ridden them for yourself, so it's hard to say which bike you own will last the longest because you could enjoy another bike more...but you wouldn't know it until riding around.

Took my test on a Yamaha 600, the XJ6 I think. Wasn't impressed. Didn't like the ride, too much pressure on my wrists and thumbs, wrong posture, but the bit I didn't get was the lack of power. Was expecting much more.

Maybe it was just me, but above 60, it felt like it was trying to take my head off too. Probably again back to posture - I wanted to be sat upright (nice armchair) but it needed me to be horizontal.

Guess I am so used to being sat back in a car with my feet stretched out in front rather than down, that a scooter or cruiser is all I can really look forward to, and I'm quite happy with that

I sort of agree with you TGT. But I think you tend to buy bikes to suit a period of your life. A supersport is great for when you want to go for a blast in the hills. Then a few years down the track you find yourself wanting to do some travel and you buy something more touring orientated. Then a few years later your hanging with some guys on supermotos so you buy one to join the fun. Then you find yourself enjoying the off-road part of supermoto and buy a dualsport.... then.... the list goes on.
Unless your loaded with cash and you keep all your bikes, you will change bikes. If you dont, you are missing out of some of the fantastic aspects of biking.

As to the topic, I think a 600 is ok if you have restraint like zmotoguy says he has. But just remember that in the first few years you will develop riding skills like theres no tomorrow, often from making mistakes. Dont let the 600 get you into and highspeed mistakes.

When I first got my bike I had bad posture and would keep my arms locked and put all my weight there. After learning the proper posture oh boy is the ride 1000 times better and more enjoyable and I stopped coming home with a achy wrists lol

I agree with what Nerb said about buying according to the period of your life. Being in my late 20's I felt that this was the bike that I would enjoy the most at this time of my life. When I said I wanted the bike to last a long time, I did it mean that it was going to be my only bike. I just didn't want to go and buy a 250/650 and have to replace it a year or two later. My dad has a cruiser and I love taking that bike out for spins and I would love to own one some day. Hell, if I had the money I would own one of every type!... I'm gonna go play lotto now 8-)

I've made a video about this topic, but from another perspective. It's on my channel and it's my most popular video as well to this point. I'm pretty much the same as you, Z, with respect to me having a perfect driving record prior to riding, but I still didn't trust myself and decided to get a 250. (FYI I am 23 years old.) Yea, I get some grief from people who tell me to get something bigger, but I've also gotten compliments from people due to my bike's lack of chicken strips. :)

That being said, everyone is different, and from the looks of your videos it looks like you're handling your ZX-6R just fine. I still love my CBR and I'm sure I'll get something bigger eventually, but I'm not in a hurry.
