Why Are The Greats So Great?

I've been trying to think deeply about what are some of the common trends among the best/most popular motovlog/vlog channels such as:

-DoItWithDan
-JakeTheGardenSnake
-BaronVonGrumble
-Walterrific
etc.

I find the majority show almost ZERO time just riding around with nothing being said or commented.
They typically talk faster than than the average person in normal conversation.
They consistently comment on interesting things going on around them.
They often have some overarching story their trying to tell or point they discuss during their moto adventure. (except Jake, he just takes his SuperMoto wherever he wants and does an average of 42 wheelies per episode)
They're truly PASSIONATE about motorcycles and riding.
They're generally expressive in their speaking with a clear mixture of tone and emphasis.
They get excited about things really easily.

What do you think? What makes your favorite vloggers your favorites? How can we apply the things we love about them to our own vlogging? Cheers!

What I've noticed is that they don't have a disconnect between what they are thinking and what comes out of their mouth. Most are very accurately depicting what is going on around them and pull you in with some good imagery...it's like really good writing except with speech. I help college kids write with more personality and give them some of Eminem's lyrics and then put up a memo from some old managers that I've had and ask the difference. Eminem puts you into his story, the managers are very dry and sometimes to the point (Eminem is not something usually talked about on a Christian college...but that's how I roll)

You have to remember that most of their viewers have never ridden and are very young teens who are dreaming about what they want to do when they get a bike. Their comments tell their age and mentality. We live in a divided world where we have people who do cool things and those who like to watch and pretend they are there too.

I'd agree with Joel. I can't stand the vlogs that talk about something completely unrelated to what you're seeing on screen.

You do get some big boys who don't talk at all though, such as Royal Jordainian.

Part of it is content. They only show when interesting stuff is happening or they're talking about it. Part is personality. Those guys are very outgoing and don't seem to have an "off" switch to their persona, of if they do, you never see it on camera. They have things about them that are unique in terms of how they talk, the language they use and gestures they make that set them apart. People do like that. I had a guy recently sub to me because I said "Ass Hat" and "Drunker than Cooter Brown". That's just shit I normally say, but people find it interesting. Their editing is usually pretty clean, too.

I don't think it's too complicated. I just think they generally make content that appease the main youtube demographic. Males age 13-25.

LOL, those sound like totally valid reason for subscription. I guess it comes to value. Educational value, informational value, or entertainment value, or any mix thereof.

Plus they've been doing it for a while and kind of cornered the Market when MotoVlogging became Popular and somewhat main stream.

Absolutely. Walteriffic I find really humorous. bakerXderek practically has his own language. He can go around saying gootyhole, CHEAH, mushroom tip, ropes and using cunt as a prefix, suffix, pronoun, and transitional phrase without anyone getting offended (Cunt is usually considered grossly offensive in the U.S. much more so than UK). not only that, but he causes other people to do it and that's how his fans address him on his channel! Interesting social study there.

I've had this conversation with other UK folks and they seem more ambivalent about it. Maybe it just seems like it's used a whole lot more over there than it actually is. I know in the States it's pretty much automatic fighting words, especially if used toward a female. A little different within some subcultures, but for the most part, it's a no-no.

I've had this conversation with other UK folks and they seem more ambivalent about it. Maybe it just seems like it's used a whole lot more over there than it actually is. I know in the States it's pretty much automatic fighting words, especially if used toward a female. A little different within some subcultures, but for the most part, it's a no-no.

It's more down to who you're talking to, the older the person, the more likely they are to find it offensive, although that applies pretty much to all colloquial expletives.

My favorite MotoVlogger is bakerXderek. He has the scenery, the personality and the adventures that drew me in. He made me want to be part of the community even though I could only vlog in a car at the time. I have just recently started motovlogging after buying my bike.

I do think too many people are too focused on being the next big thing. Copying others to take a piece of the pie. Not being themselves. IMHO you should Focus on being yourself, having fun and nothing else. YouTube is a wonderful place to be, and you'll meet many new friends from around the globe. I have been at it for over 2 years and just gathered 1600 subs. Nothing compared to the greats, but the amount of fun I have doing what I do just does not let up. As soon as you start looking at the numbers like they mean anything other than the amount of people you connected with... just beware. It is the way to unhappiness.

Walterific is cool because he doesn't take himself very seriously and it way more out going than I'll ever be. Motonosity lives and works in the same areas I do so it's fun to see where he rides. He's also seems like a really humble dude that just wants people to fall in love with riding.

People probably find my videos boring as I like to ride and talk about something that's on my mind. If something odd happens I'll talk about that too. I just posted a video today called What is Success? where I talk about how amazing it is 20 people took the time to watch one of my videos and if I ever lose sight of how cool that is then I've failed. Honestly I think I'd motovlog even if no one watched them.

I think the key to success is to put out decent content, be consistent and stick with it.
