What not to do when clearing your SD card...

After a day out, I copy the files from my SD card in my Ghost to my Mac, delete the files and eject the card. Job done, right?

No.

I set off on an 9ish hour round trip on Monday. Drift say you can get around 13 hours of 720p footage on a 32GB card. Rode down, stayed at my hotel and set off the next morning, about a 45m trip, got there and the camera said 0% left. Uh? Nothing special happened on the way down so deleted all the files, and it said 64% free. Umm... So I formatted the card, bingo! 100% got home and there was 55% left, it had taken me 5 hours with stopping so fair enough, close to what was advertised.

What I discovered was, the Mac keeps deleted files from external storage in the trash. This must shadow space on the card. Looking when I deleted the files from the Mac, the card still said 17GB free, empty the trash, 31.74GB free.

Lesson learned, take out the trash!!

Yep, that's how it works :) ! Macs are great, but they are a little different than PCs :D (thankfully ~_~ .....). It stinks when goofy things happen like that while recording, but it's all a bit of a learning curve sometimes :p . At least now you know ;) .....

:)

I always lock the card (so my computer can't write anything onto it), copy my files, then format the card in my camera.

Granted I am using a GoPro HD Hero 2 and not a Drift.

I was avoiding formatting it to keep the video numbers going, back to 1 now... :)

Not an issue for me as I keep them in dated folders thankfully!

Hmmm, you know what the term "PC" stands for :D ? Piece of cr@p ;) ~

Wouldn't want anything from Micro$oft  !

Each has their place. The Mac nazis are complete arseholes and so blinkered to Apple. It's what you want it for and if it's right for you that makes it what it is. If you bought it to pose in Starbucks, you need putting down...

However, I'm sure that Trash facility has saved a butt or two in the past :)

You should always copy the contents of the card to the computer, then put the card back on the camera and format it using the camera.
That way it won't have a chance to fail.
Windows 8 messes with the storage the same way as apple OS, making hidden folders and messing with the permissions of files.

And... how can you get 13 hours on a 32GB card? My card fills up after 4 hours continuous use @ 1280x720.

I've always been in to PC but a few years ago I got a MacBook Pro. It's the best laptop I ever had! Still have it and it works perfectly! :P

It's in the Drift manual, on the way back, 5ish hours was less than half the card. Didn't note the numbers, but I will do when I dump today's card.

Drift also say that at 1080p you can get 5-6 hours, I forget the exact amount.

29m58s clip @720p/30 is 1.87GB. So theoretically, 16 hours in round figures on my 31.47GB card.
