What I don't like about youtubers!!

Ok this is a quick non motorvlogging post.

I watch videos on youtube of many subjects, and the videos I hate the most is, well for instance the one I was just watchng. the video is 6:30 long, but it had page after page of text.......WHY TEXT!!!! this is video, with sound!!! I you want to narrate do voice over while the video is playing. But to sit there and have to read is a turn off......

Anyone agree?
 
I hear ya, id switch off

However I have seen the odd one that purely text and quite enjoyed it.

I switch off when people ramble for 2 minutes about nothing,or swear stupidly in cartoon voices for minutes on end, YummieR6 did it in his one video which i saw pissed of a lot of peeps to a few months back.
 
Yeah I am the same either talk or not talk but dont do a whole fkn video of text. If I wanted to read I would get a book.
 
Text is sometimes helpfull, when u have a vid with NO sound...How else do u get the msg across?

I have a vid or 2 with Text, it helps inform what happened, the veiwer wasnt there remember.
But i do like to limit my text, cutting down is hard though, if the description is long.

Allthough, audio was put with video for a reason, just sometimes your audio doesnt work, or your camera doesnt have a mic, some friggn idiot might be talking in the background, etc etc etc.

If it is 6:30 of FULL page text, well thats just silly editing!!

Well yeah... I use little text notes on screen to add info/explanation of what just happened/look there kinda thing if it's something I only noticed in editing....

I haven't advanced to voice dubbing yet.... Actually.... I think I prefer the 'in the moment' Vlog speaking..... Trying to remember what the hell I was thinking... Then dubbing over the top? ....hmmmm I dunno

Little text notes flashing on the screen is ok...i am talking about paragraph after paragraph......I wanted to see this exclusive video that only this fella had as DEFINITE proof of the existence of ghost..i mean he had the evidence, this 10 year old youtuber. It was just shameful that this fella kept the rest of the world waiting through a 45 minute video just to see a 2 minute clip and 43 minutes of text.....The world needs this info!!!!!!

Ahhh, now i see how much text you talkin about. Most ive ever used on a vid is on this one.

The camera setup on that bike was 'Security' LipStick Cam (cable-HandyCam setup) NO Mic.
So to explain the scene, was nescessary to have some. I was worried when editing if their weas too much?, i did cut down abit before putting it up.
But 45min Vid, i woulda skipped to the 'action shots' anyway. If im gunna read a book...its not on a YT Vid. lol

I now understand your pain.

I strapped by gopro to my bicycle helmet and didn't have my mic, the audio was mostly useless but the footage was pretty decent. I ended up using music and text overlays to help it along. Haven't finished it yet, though.

I try to keep text to the minimum as well. Timing of the text is also very helpful in editing (how long each should flash e/t/c). I try and get outside opinion on stuff like that before I upload
 
I've heard of audio books, but never a video book!

I admit I do use quite a bit of text.
I think of it as just another tool. Okay when done correctly or at the right moment, not helpful or even distracting if used incorrectly. For me this is often when people choose fonts that are too thin, small and on the screen for too little time.
I try not to limit myself with rules like: Text is for books only. I'm just starting out and need all the help I can get!
Mine are usually overlays so there is still video progressing in the background. Multi-media progressing on multiple levels.

Sometimes I feel that certain videos are helped by it, say a maintenance video.
Instead of skipping back and listening again you can just pause it and re-read what you might have missed or didn't understand until you saw the visual a few seconds later. Now seeing both and re-reading maybe it's easier to understand. At least that's my experience.

Also, as someone said, sometimes the audio is poor or too noisy.
If, for example, there happens to be a running motorcycle in my video and I don't have a mic (probably because I consider the engine notes more important than what I might be saying), I then find that the vocal audio can been obliterated at times. However if I consider some information important and now missing, I sometimes shore up or reinforce the message with text.
 
I've watched a few of RJ's clips, he doesn't narrate, but I think the caption before each clip is great. I'm undecided what to do, I'm not sure if I like the sound of my voice, find out this week on that one...

Trouble is with where I ride, and the times I ride, there are few "events" like the city riders, it's all nice open countryside, so a caption for the moment might be fine but the moments will be few and far between that are caption-worthy, so I'd need commentary or walls of text...

...what , Like .... "Cow ...... ........ Another Cow ....... Fence...... ....... ......... Oooh look that cloud looks like my mother in law!, fat and lumpy!....... ........ Corner .......... " ;)

Countryside rides! ... I prefer them to stuck in traffic in the city!! .... You just get to edit out way more 'between moments' footage.... :)
 
More like hill... hill. steeper hill... :)

I've got one bit from a half hour section where the only thing that happened was a red light and being overtaken by a different bike on double lines... That'll make one short upload haha! :)
 
Ah ok .... Prime 'ramble commentary' or topic of the day/moment area then .... Are there side roads? .. You know .. The ones you've been going past for years and always thought "I wonder where that goes?" .... Explore!!!
