It starts with my first bike.
I got my endorsement last may on a whim and was planning on saving up several thousand dollars for a bike, but in the mean time I had set an alert on my phones craigslist app to tell me anytime a bike was posted for under 1k (my petty cash at the time). i had already purchased all my gear.
One day while watching a world cup game at a bar the phone bleeped and told me that something had been posted. At the time what I wanted was an fz6 or fz1 or f4i. The alert said that someone had posted a running 1994 GSXR 600 for 500$. When I contacted the guy only minutes after he posted it he said that it was at his shop off of Hillsborough. I called my brother (truck) and got out the cash and set on my way. On the way out the guy called me to make a correction. He thought it was a GSXR but it was a GSX. The bike was naked so he made the mistake based on the engine being the similar. The guy had bought it from a tow truck company and cleaned the carbs charged the battery and sold it to me. he does this often. The bike ran when I got it so I was happy.
The bike ended up being a very good beginner’s choice. It was very very comfortable. sporty and relatively good looking. It was very reliable too. It had been sitting for over a year and the guy just put in oil spray cleaned the carbs and charged the battery. I changed the oil + filter the tires and the chain sprockets and that was all the maintenance I did in the 6 months I owned her. She was cheap and reliable, but she had her shortcomings which lead me to my second bike. She was FAT and I am fat. so combined we easily overwhelmed the little 70 hp 30 ft lb engine and even though she had been reliable to that point I couldn’t believe that she was going to hold on much longer. I also became single so I started saving up cash again. In teh time I had the Longshot (the bikes name) I had been doing even more research. I really like her seating position, but realized that a similar bike was hard to find. I had been on the verge of buying a newer GSX and adding a GSXR 1100 engine to it.
One day I was riding out to St Pete to wander around on my bike when I heard an awesome thumping pumping growling snarling sound coming from behind me. I figured it was a Harley, but when it blew past me I saw a bright red sport bike. I tried really hard to catch up but we had hit the bridge and he was far ahead of me. The sound was intoxicating and the rider was sitting in a reasonable position. Eventually I caught up to the rider in traffic and read "Firestorm 996"(why he had the European fairings is beyond me) on the side. I pulled out my droid and starting looking up the specs. Then when I got home I started lurking on superhawkforum.com . It was then decided. I kept an open mind for the fz1 however; the super hawk was always on my mind and in my dreams. I read many reviews all glowing and learned the history of the VTR. It really is an amazing and friendly bike and an excellent liter bike to start on. Honda made the same exact bike from 1997-2005 which I took as a sign of excellent design coming from Honda. She was very unique looking with a half fairing and side radiators and she is very narrow and comfortable. She is a bike that is very good at every application though not “excellent” at anything (aside from wheelie ing and sounding amazing) and very easy to maintain with her superior Vtwin design.
How I came across this particular VTR is like this; by January I had already saved several thousand dollars towards my new bike and had planned on saving a couple more to buy a bike outright. Since I was so close to my goal I decided it was time to take count of all super hawks in Tampa bay. At the time there were five available. 2 at the Barneys and 2 at go eco green machines and one overpriced one on CL. One day whilst wandering St Pete I decided to stop in and look at the ones at go eco (having seen the others). They had an unimpressive black one and then my bike. She was different than all the others. She had Kerker exhausts and a polished frame along with a non-standard paint scheme and underbody fairing. I was hooked when I heard her turn over. I don’t really know what came over me but I had to have her right then and there so I signed the paper work and took her home.
What followed is an exciting if not slightly marred history followed by me paying her off on July 26th. I have high hoppes that honda will revive the Vtwin sportbike and finish the VTR1200. If they do I will buy one in a heart beat.
I love my bike.
