I think theyre tear off strips. As riders go around, flies and dirt land on the visor, so they remove a clear film strip, and they have a clear visor.
I know TT riders take one off for every lap, dunno bout track riders.

I see them on MotoGP riders but never understand what they are for. Until now..

Those will be found on pretty much every helmet in the racing world. Some of them are motorized, for sports that have a LOT of mud/muck like super/moto-cross or the Baja racers. Everyone else uses manual tear offs like those pictured.

i love the motorcross ones its like a camera film cartridge you pull a bit of string and it pulls the film across XD

The motorcross ones are awesome.

If you've ever been to a MX meet and looked at the track afterwards, it's covered in the tear offs.

In the case of track riders, it's more for the little bits of tire rubber getting flung off the rear tire. The tiny bits of rubber are partially melting and stick to whatever they hit, i.e. helmet visor of guy next in line, (who is usually right on your tail). If you watch enough races, you'll see the riders tearing them off and the shields blowing around on the track.
