We’ll Remove Motorcycles From Bus Lanes And Fit Speed Limiters To High-powered Machines

I read this elsewhere. They're barking.

I'm largely ambivalent about the Greens. I'm not against reducing pollution or encouraging more economical and cleaner forms of transport at all, go for your life on promoting it.

Where this fell down for me was the removing the safety element of biking like being allowed to use bus lanes. If you start discouraging bikes by removing the main advantage of commuting on a bike, then fewer people will ride to work and take a car, then you have congestion. Take the little Eco-mini cars. Great, but they take two hours sitting in traffic to get through London. Any bike can get through in 30 minutes, and will have been pumping less pollution in to the atmosphere for less time.

As for speed limiters, it is impossible to retrospectively fit limiters to bikes (well, in a practical sense), so you're just going to promote the used bike market with their less green engines for people to go ride round on at whatever speed they want.

If you really want to tackle speeding and pollution, you need to look at the general attitude of the British public, and you need to look at what speed limits are currently in force. Most people who have a sensible attitude to motoring will drive/ride at a speed they think appropriate to the conditions. Slap a 40 sign on a long straight road with no turnings, the speed limit will be ignored as most people see it as unreasonable. Play fair with speed limits, and then the ones you do set low, people will be more likely to obey them. As for promoting economical and low pollution transport, tier the tax bands more. At the moment there are three tax bands for bikes, why not make it 5 and place it based on what economy each cc bike typically has.

And then have you seen the latest proposals for lower emissions in London? Essentially within the current congestion zone as from 2020, vehicles not meeting various Euro engine requirements will have to pay a levy, including motorcycles, so pretty much anything before 2007 (I think) will have to pay a levy to use the inner LEZ. Reason being London is WAY behind targets for air quality. However, target bikes with a £12 charge, a few will take to their cars, and the few emissions you save from that older bike coming through will be doubled because there's now a car in traffic for 4x the amount of time as the bike.

This stuff needs thinking through better. Stuff the EU, stuff the Greens, apply some common sense.

already heard about this. Theres no way they can restrict big bikes. Especially when your local chav can own a 200bhp BMW and drive like a twat and since 1000bhp exist on the roads. And clearly need to do some research on congestion of they are going to stop us using bus lanes

Well, they have a slim chance of any real say, and even if they do, look how much say tye Lib Dems have had with a moderate stake in the coalition. Bugger all really. So IF they get a coalition stake later this year, how big a fish is biking to fry amongst all the other green issues they'd like to tackle?

Bikers are an easy target because we're a minority. Imagine the shit storm if they had suggested similar new rules for cars?

I quite liked a chunk of the Greens manifesto, but this does seem a tad like an uneducated move, which hasn't been thought out at all!
