Upgrading from GoPro Hero 1 to GoPro Hero 3 Black

So I currently have a GoPro Hero 1, which I picked up way back in 2010. In technology terms, the camera is a dinosaur. Lately, the video recordings have occasionally started to glitch. and in winter temperatures (below freezing) the camera will just shut off after a few minutes, so it's basically useless because I originally bought the camera for snowboarding.

I've had thoughts about upgrading to the Hero 3 Black, especially since as we approach the fall I'll be riding more at night and the Hero 3 Black's video quality at night is excellent from what I've seen. It will also allow me to use one device to record audio. The GoPro Hero 1 does not have an external mic port so I currently use a standalone voice recorder and I have to sync audio and video in my editing software and sometimes the voice recorder likes to shut off randomly.

Also, does anyone know if GoPro has a program where you can trade in your old GoPro and get credit towards a new one? I heard a rumor about that but I can't find anything concrete.

Thanks.

IMHO if you are going to Vlog, go with the Drift HD Ghost. Nice quality vid, has the mic ports and a usable interface

I have a GoPro 3 Silver. The quality it's just what I need and no more than what I can use. 2.7k and 4k are just not worth the extra 100. plus, if you have a smartphone you have the remote. You can also plug a mic into the GoPro 3 although you do need an adapter for it.

Do check ++AB (AccidentalBroadcast) setup if you are considering the GoPro for Vlogging.

About the trade-in, no idea.

Looks like I answered my own question about the trade-in part.

This person on Reddit says that he was able to get 20% off a new GoPro by trading in his old dead GoPro. I guess I'd have to contact them to see if that is still valid since the camera is basically dead to me in the wintertime anyway.

As for Black vs. Silver, I have to think about it further. I have no use for 4K right now and I do have a smart phone so I can use that as a remote control, so I guess I'd lean towards the Silver for right now and save the 100 or 80 bucks depending on the trade-in.

Sorry for the double post but I just have to vent. I freaking lost another vlog entry today because the audio decided to shut off again, this time after 45 seconds and after I had put fresh batteries in it, and it was going to be a good one. I was 2nd in a group ride and we had a deer jump in front of us. Thankfully we all avoided it but I now only have the video and not the audio...

On the other hand I found a GoPro Hero 2 HD with WiFi backpack at Sam's Club for 199. Thoughts on this?

EDIT: I'm hearing rumors that there will probably be a GoPro Hero 4 HD released around the holidays, so I'm probably going to wait until then and then have the fancy schmancy new stuff that will make everyone else drool.
