After much thought I’ve decided to stay with the 10…It will be another 4-6 weeks until I can get out for a ride - at which time I’ll try a few recordings. I’ll be playing with mic positioning inside my helmet as well as experimenting with front vent open vs. closed

Good luck! :D Let us know how it goes!

In my opinion, a wise decision... You can always upgrade to a different camera if your testing comes out with bad results once you start riding again, and if you can't ride for another 4-6 weeks, that puts you ever closer to the GoPro Hero 13 coming out too! :-D

Using an action camera in a car is likely the cause of your issue, I imagine it overheated... they are action cameras designed to be used outdoors, the air cools them, no air flow, they get hot and then go into thermal shutdown to protect the batteries and camera from damage. I actually quite like the camera segmenting footage, and at least with the GoPro the gap is seamless where as with the Insta360 One R and some other cameras, there is a gap between files. It is also better to have smaller files, in case of an issue, you should then only lose a single file if it corrupts, not the whole video.
Although I have the One RS rather than the One R, I have found it doesn't break down the video into smaller sections, so it will record until it overheats, runs out of battery, runs out of memory, or, in some cases, fails. The batteries generally last about 80 minutes.

Does that mean if it fails, that you lose the whole video?

After watching some comparison reviews, and since the new GoPro is still prone to stalling and overheating which is my biggest concern, I decided to go with the Insta360 AcePro route instead. So far no issue recording at 4K just fine, using their recommend mode for night shots is good too. I don't like their quick release adapter thing.

Congrats on the new camera, I'm glad it's working out for you! I've seen some really wonky stuff involving those Ace Pros.

I'm leery of the non-removable lens cover and focusing issues I heard about, too.

FWIW, I have yet to overheat my Hero 12, and I've recorded for almost an hour at a time. I think it's really highly-dependent on the framerate. I shoot at 4k/30 with nary an issue.

That's good to hear, but after experiencing stalls and overheats with my older Hero7 and still seeing some people facing issues with newer ones, I wasn't hard set on continuing with GoPro, nothing to lose from my side anyway to try another brand.

I already damaged two lens protectors from stone and my butterfingers, so far so good. If it really does need to be replace, I think there is a local specialist store that can handle it, so I'm not too worried as long as the lens protector screen is on.

THAT is fantastic news! We don't have any specialty shops around here to do that stuff - so it's a mail & wait situation for me, at least.

Whenever the debate over what brand action camera is best, I always try to temper my fanboy-ness of GoPro. Just because *I* have several and they rarely, if ever, give me problems, doesn't mean someone else in THEIR use case won't have issues.

I can only report on MY experience with a particular camera... and I like to use multiple cameras at once to record my rides, because I'm a narcissist who likes seeing himself on camera [and it helps me hide flubbed sentences and jump cuts, LOL].

I want to see ALL the action camera companies succeed in putting out excellent products - it's only going to benefit US, the end consumer.

Man I still film with a Hero7 / Hero 8 / Insta 360 x2 setup, I'm so far behind on camera tech! I didn't even know the Insta360 Ace Pro existed until this thread!!

I want to see them all work great too, but GoPro (to me) doesn't seem to be stepping up, hence my lack of faith running with them for now. My climate is super hot and humid so chances of overheating is quite high, my Hero7 is a testament of that, if I run higher than 2K.

You and me both, I still have the Hero7 and run it time to time but eventually had to move to the next step to get higher sharpness, 4K/8K ready with much better night shots.

I upgraded from a Hero 6 Black to a 12 Black, so it was totally worth it for me.
One thing the Hero 12 will have over the 10 is a longer recording time per battery charge.
What could be a negative with the 12 Black is that it no longer has GPS data built into it.
