The councils budgets are tight enough as they are, without needing this. I think its a great idea, but nothing will come out of it :)

Agreed... unfortunately.

Motorcycle safety is important, but they'll never go for this.

You're better off looking out for yourself. Some good tyres that perform well in wet (pilot road 3s, as an example) and simply avoiding the manhole covers will save your life.

I like to mess around and slalom around them.

Yes, I'm aware tyres don't stop you slipping. I never said they did.

I slipped on a manhole cover about 3 weeks ago, and I have pilot road 3's on my bike.

All I said was it's better for wet weather and you should just avoid the manhole covers...

I agree that they will not replace all manhole covers BUT any on a corner should be, if your new to a road its not hard to miss a cover in traffic or poor light.

We have all felt that slide and the butt clenching moment...

I beleive there is a company or organisation that pester councils to redesign manhole positioning if the current one is in a dangerous place, however I put a query in and haven't heard anything. I think It's one of those things where the council or problematic party need numerous complaints to take action :(

While I agree with this argument and feel it is wholly unacceptable that with such a plethora of options that highway maintenance companies have to work with that they would scrimp for a shiny metal lid on a bend in a country that rains 95% of the year.

I also see that foreseeability is our responsibility, if there is a tree branch in the road, do you expect to drive over that too? Distance, speed gives us time to respond, albeit, stop or manoeuvre around any obstacle.

That said, 3 months or so ago I came off my bike on a manhole cover breaking the 2nd bone in my big toe... it's still broken now, and is rather unpleasant to do press-ups on.

(sadly I left the camera on time-lapse when I did this... 1 frame = a second... spill at 31 seconds. ).

Another thing that ticks me off is those painted lines that they put on dual carriageways sometimes when you are coming up to a roundabout, you can not avoid them as they are all across the road and you have to try and brake on the slippy surface when its wet, soo stupid and unfair.

That's how I crashed at 60mph :(

I assume you are talking about the raised lines on approach to a junction. These are there for two purposes.
1 to give extra grip when slowing down quickly
2 is to lure drivers into thinking they are going faster than they really are because they get closer together, the closer to the junction they are. This increases tire noise so drivers naturally slow down quicker

But I also agree they are a pain in the tits!
