To Camera or Not to Camera

Do the math!
I used to be a professional photographer for a lot of years. I used to follow a photographer named Chase Jarvis (google if you want) he once said, "The best camera is the one you have with you" with that said we all have smart phones and gopros or senas or ghosts or whatever action cam you use to make your vlogs.

My question is, does anyone carry a "legit" camera with them like a Canon 5D or a Nikon (whatever) full frame camera with them?

I am going to start carrying mine because I like shooting in RAW and being able to work on the image post to make it a great capture. But that is me.

Let me know what you use or don't use and why.

I have a Nikon D3000. A crappy lens and ok camera, so I don’t carry it around with me. I find my iPad Pro is more versatile with the numerous shooting apps I can use.

I carry my DSLR from time to time but not all the time. Depends on weather, scenery, and everything else I have to make room for in the bags.

My one buddy carries a big $ dslr, it's so clunky and expensive I don't think I'll ever have one. I'm who you described, I like the convenience of using my Iphone. The audio for video is way better than the action cams. I'm trying to make a point to use my new DJI cam, for stills and video, all of which should be better than my phone, except the audio.

I carry a Sony NEX-5T, its small, not too expensive so I wont get heart broken if it breaks or gets scuffed. I got a 35mm prime lens on it right now, the kit lens broke after I ran into the camera trying to catch a flyby shot lol. My next camera is probably gonna be a Sony A6000 but I wont be taking that with me for camping and such given how rough I am with my things.

OK I have a lot of stuff and a large variety of bags.

From time to time I go out with a DSLR but the issue I find is I'm to worried about the gear to enjoy the ride. So most of the time I just use my phone, and if its just going on social media the phone is fine.

I always carry my A7rii. I prefer filming with it, and use my Helmet Cam as more of a sprinkling here and there instead of my primary footage.

I really wanna get better with my shots, I had no idea that motovlogging would lead me towards photography. I don't think I could bring a larger expensive camera with me simply due to space. Trying to cram a dslr in with all the other junk I bring on my trips...wouldnt end well.
Bringing a camera along really pushes me to stop and enjoy the scenery rather than blasting past it on my way to a destination. I've found myself having to stop, turn around and check out a spot because of its "instagramability"

I have my Nikon D3100 with the standard 18-55mm which I do take out when going to events. However I don't film on it. Mainly cause it'll only record in 10 minute bursts. So I mainly uses my S8 camera when I'm out and about for both video and photos. I wouldn't mind a slightly bigger lense as I find it dosen't zoom enough at times

While getting stuff ready for going on YouTube I watched a ton of videos and there was this one channel that made me want a camera in addition to the gopro stuff. I opted for a bridge camera, Panasonic FZ80, I use it to film off the bike stuff, I use it for every day (grandkids) etc. and I hopefully will have someone use it at the track while I'm wearing the action cam. I carry it in one of my hard cases every time I go out. I don't want to be in a situation where my phone wont be good enough to capture something. Thanks to The Magpie for convincing me, I made the purchase and have had it for so many pictures that I would have missed otherwise! Thanks Amanda

I find for most things (even going out sightseeing without the bike) my iPhone camera does the job. I’ve got a mid-range (at least it was when I got it about 10 years ago) DSLR, but it rarely sees daylight nowadays.
