Thoughts On Patreon?

Hey guys! I noticed a few members have links to their Patreon accounts in their signatures. I just setup a Patreon account, and I'm curious if anyone actually has good luck with it. Also, what are your thoughts on Patreon?

To be honest, I think that I have only ever come across a couple of Youtubers that produced content that I'd pay to watch and one of them is now dead!
I guess if you are doing Youtube full time as a job then it is kinda OK, but if it is a hobby then I can't really see the point.

not for me really, but what i dont mind paying for is say a youtuber had a few shirts or a sticker pack as such i would happly give my hard earnt cash then

Common misunderstanding people have with patreon is that they think its strictly about paying. It actually isn't. Its main purpose is to follow content creators. With or without paying is your choice. You can not pay and still have the exclusives from that creator. I have a patreon and i follow a few people on there but i don't pay for their content.. Patreon is a great way to get funding for videos, yes. At the end of the day, vlogs cost money, theres expenses involved. I think good content deserves to be rewarded. And majority of the time people don't ask for no more than $1 as a minimum. But as i said, i just use it to follow some creators on there

So does waterskiing and rock climbing and parachuting..... all are hobbies, asking someone for money so I can do something I enjoy is like turning up to the pub with my mates and sitting in on rounds but leaving before it is my turn to get one in, or even worse, just not getting the round in and waiting for someone else to get thirsty so your turn gets skipped! If it is about sharing content then just share it on YouTube, or Facebook, or Twitter, or forums, all free to use with no funding required.

Well for a starters; water skiing, rock climbing and parachuting are completely different to the pub :D. And im pretty sure youtube has something similar, YoutubeRed. hmmm.. facebook aint far off subscription services either.. It is what it is at the end of the day. Don't knock something because it isn't the same as the other thing is all im saying. Be open and explore the potential instead of alienating yourself from it. :)

I'll never use Patreon or similar unless I turn it into a job and if I turn it into a job, I'll probs stop enjoying it, so I guess I'll never go that route as my content is not exactly Pewdiepie levels of entertainment. It is a hobby to me, I guess if it is about the money for others then it makes sense but having a viewer base would be probably something I'd concentrate on first even if it was about the money as without folk watching then no one will contribute.

Im open to donations ;) via patreon of course :P

But yeah, i concur. I only have patreon as i say, to follow those creators. You get some insight exclusives which is kind of cool. But i dont pay anything. If you wanna eat your heart out, look at chaseon2wheels rebuild patreon and see how much $$$ he gets/got!!

aye, my point exactly, he did it for the money as he is a full time YouTuber with 727,300 subs, as opposed to my 176 lol, if I went Patreon, I would imagine I would lose subs, not gain them.

yeah, i totally see where you're coming from with that and i have to agree with you! I'd seriously laugh myself to an early grave the day i can call Youtube a fulltime job :D - So if you want me dead folks, best start subbing and liking those vids of mine :D

I have signed up for Patreon but never used it. Thought about setting goals and stuff if people contributed till certain marks but scraped the idea. Maybe I'll check out Go Fund Me instead. Haha!

Go fund me is shady af. Didn't some randomer set one up for the Porsche guy that Yammie wrote off? lol class-a example of profiting on someone's downfall.

Everything can be shady if used for malicious intention. Have an idea of a project stuffing a 250cc motor into the 125cc fun bike, I think I can cope with the cost but just for fun thinking why not ask any interested parties to fund the project, they can see the entire process/engineering involved in stuffing it into the small bike and how to make it work and run properly, etc. Still not fully decided if I should.

I'm with Hippo on this. I know a lot of full time youtubers have been hit with the whole adpocalypse so they've been using Patreon. There is one expection I have and thats the channel Techmoan. He covers old and strange products. I think he does as a hobby but he goes into a good amount of detail. Though I don't support anyone on Pateron I can see why people do.

I've been dabbling in content creation for several years and never put enough love into one thing long enough to watch it grow substantially. Before making videos (I have a fishing channel as well), I was really into podcasting. Prior to actually launching mine, I spent quite long time listening to a podcast about podcasting. He talks about all sorts of things like funding, partnering, advertising, audio, content planning, etc. MOST of what he talks about could be valuable cross-platform and applied to nearly all facets of content creation. The cast is called The Audacity to Podcast. He has hundreds of episodes but you can search by topic.

I only bring this up because he has an episode or two out there specifically around the sensitivity of asking subscribers for money, how/why/when to do it, etc. Good stuff. At the end of the day, it all boils down to value. If people find more value in what you're providing than what they're paying for (mostly free), they'll give you money for it. I would never expect anyone to pay to hear me talk about chopping up my neighbor's tree that wrecked my back yard fence lol.
