Is it just me that's pretty damned sure he wouldn't have landed on a handily placed matress if the car would have hit him? I'm not sure how people have come to the conclusion that full gear would have been of no use there... :?

Either way they're wrong.

Find your nastiest mate, and ask them to punch you several times all over your body as hard as they can. Then you get the choice of wearing swimming trunks or your full leathers whilst they do this.

And any paramedic will tell you a thousand stories about how the leathers 'held someone together' when their body were extremely broken or torn open, where they would have undoubtedly died otherwise.
