The one reason I'd get a car

This image explains all. It was like this for 2 hours. Most rain I have ever seen, and most wind, I again have ever seen.

I want a car, simply for practicality, and weather protection. I can't be doing with riding towards the winter.

Coincidentally, I also said, that the moment a bike costs more to own and run than a car, I'd sell and buy a car.

I'm at that stage now. £4200 purchase, plus £1200 insurance would get me quite a reasonable car.....

You're mad.

Both of you, man up. It gets worse than this.

Meh, I have no interest in owning a cage. A bit of rain never hurt anyone, and even if my motorbike cost more than a car, I'd still keep the bike. Don't think I could face the morning commute otherwise....

Man up BM!

Shut up. All of you :P

I am a man. I just don't see the point in riding in terrible conditions. It'll harm the bike, and puts me at risk. My commute is dangerous enough, without adding hazardous weather into the mix!

Nothing wrong with a bit of rain :P

Some guys here in Czech are riding bikes to the mountains with snowboards attached :D For them biking season ends at 31st December and begins at 1st January.

As for me, the rain is surely uncomfortable but it is nothing I can't take. I also own the cage-black Toyota Corolla E11 hatchback, because 2nd car with driver is incredible advantage in the family.

You sir, have officially made ANY weather related excuses to not ride, invalid.

yeah guys, stop being wimps, i even do this in Canada from time to time.
My cage is just as inconvenient as my bikes. It has two seats and trunk that can't fit a printer in it.

I am not as skilled of a rider as those guys in the snow, I have only been riding for about 7 months. I'd rather not put myself in danger riding in those conditions. I will, because on the other hand its fun, but I like not crashing xD

If I may...

I've ridden in snow in Paris and the region, and in all kinds of shit weather. It's absolutely not impossible, it's just really impractical.

You're drenched when you arrive at your destination - if it's your job, and you need a suit, that makes it barely possible to do because then you have to change etc. A gigantic pain in the ass.

I loved riding in the snow when I was a student, because then I didn't care about being on time or wet, or badly dressed. So that works. The moment you insert constraints, it becomes a different problem.

To this day I like riding in the rain and the snow, but it has to be for fun - not for practical reasons.

So my conclusion is... if the above applies, and in your life you need to be somewhere at a certain time in a certain manner, and with a certain composure - get a car but keep the bike.

If not - the bike is enough.

My 2 cents.

Hehe I remember my first ride in the snow. I used to ride 125cc chineese enduro. It was 6 maybe 7 years ago, quite "harsh" winter for us locals, and I've decided to have some fun in the snow. Pulled the bike out of garage, started it and crashed on the first 15 meters away from my home. Nothing serious, just my ego was damaged because there were people watching

My next winter journey was next year after that fiasco at 23rd December. Same bike, almost no warm gear (only improvisations), temperature -5°C / 23ºF, 3 meters high heaps of snow along the road and more than 40 kilometers long trip at average speed 90kph. Cagers looked at me like at some fucking madman but it was awesome experience. My only gear was helmet, leather jacket, jeans, army boots and biking leather gloves. I even didn't get sick, just frozen to the bone. My thighs were blushed red and I felt the cold for next 3 or 4 days. But yeah, it was worth of it :D

I have my ruckus for the bad weather, the bike for the nice weather.

I do have a cage though, since sometimes I simply need it. Especially with upcoming weekend commuting to and from my university which will be 3 hours each way and I'm not so sure if its snowing/icey how good I feel about riding 3 hours in it on a sportbike haha.
