The Many Versions Of Vegas

Hi folks,

Looking around for video editing software, I'm leaning towards VEGAS (no longer owned by Sony it seems), but wanted to hear any opinions as to which versions are good.

I'd love to go with the cheapest Vegas Movie Studio, which is only $50, but can anyone say it's lacking X or Y features they'd like and are found in the higher Platinum or Suite versions?

As a very beginner editor, is there any case for the Pro versions of VEGAS, which start at $400?

EDIT: Also, any comparison to the Pinnacle software would be awesome, as they look similar to VEGAS at a casual glance.

I'd check out to see what Adobe is offering, a lot of their products are monthly licensed now (photoshop is 10 bucks a month)
