Five times a day the call to prayer is blasted from powerful load speakers mounted on the minarets of mosques all over Indonesia. I can hear many of them from my house here in Yogyakarta. The purpose of this is to call Muslims to mandatory worship. It could be compared to church bells in the olden days.
The first one goes off around 4:30 AM thankfully that is just about the time we want to wake up anyway.
