Great topic, not sure why I did not think about this. The one correction is that you are not 100% anonymous as governments and hackers monitor different tor nodes. So if by chance you connect to one of the monitored tors you can be traced. While it is very difficult to trace back your IP it has been done as the onion network has been compromised in the past. As you mentioned the most notably thing people would recognize in the news a few months ago the "Silk Road", a drug store was shut down.

As far as bitcoin, its pretty popular now. A few stores near me actually accept bitcoin.
