Starter Motor Question

Hey folks,

So, my starter motor has finally packed in completely, after a few months of fiddling with it to try and keep it alive. At this point, I've no choice but to get a replacement, as it's just completely buggered.

However, for the Suzuki Intruder VL 125, it'll be close to £450 for a new motor, and the VAT, and delivery, and labour charges. £450. Screw that. That's a *bit* out of my price range. The cheapest I've found is £279 inc. VAT and delivery, but that still seems a bit excessive. My motorcycling friend/co-worker found a starter motor for a Suzuki GZ 125, for only around £30 or so, and says he can fit it onto my bike after he wares down... a bolt or something, I guess? A certain fixture to make it fit properly onto the bike.

My main question is; is this safe? Is it recommended at all? Will it blow up other parts of my bike... somehow? Is it even possible?

And secondly; if it's not, please tell me if there's a website that sells *slightly* cheaper starter motors. I will love you for eternity. FOR ETERNITY.

Thanks.

The worst thing I can see it doing is not working properly and shredding the starter. It might work loose or something like that, but really a starter motor is VERY simple. If the clearance is there and you can get the mounting bolts tight there shouldn't be any issues.

 Hoots mon Jimmy! You could buy a new 125 for that.

Not to be a doubter, but are you sure it isn't just a drained battery, it can make the starter motor sound terrible.

can you not strip down the starter motor and just replace the part thats died. use that £30 starter and use it as a donor. that way you can keep the fitting and not have to worry. what happens when you try to start it? video might help us help you
