i use vegas pro 11.
it is a very powerful program and one of the best. but its difficult to use if youre just learning by trial and error.
what i would recommend is to look at local community colleges / tech schools and see if you can find a video editting course, see what program they use for the course, acquire the program and enroll in the course. this will just make your life 10x easier.
this is not what i did, and you can tell by my intro. that took foreverrrrrrr to figure out on my own just by trial and error.
