I had heard this, but figured, at the time, that I was one of the only ones who didn't know. I guess that shows you shouldn't assume anything.

What if it's rainy or muddy? Would you feel that putting your helmet down, would still be important enough?

I think if my head fell off I would not care about my helmet.

I do wonder if the distress is bowel related need for toilet paper does the rider put the helmet down first and risk needing new pants or handle the emergency and duck walk over to put the helmet down risking the need for a new helmet?

If I felt the need for someone else's assistance, I don't think I'd be too bothered about how muddy my gear is, it probably wouldn't be my priority.
