Should I be upset about this or happy?

Mr AusAdventure

Adventure is as Adventure does
So, after seeing a post on Facebook from DaMotoVlogga about searching your YouTube name in Google, I did just that and found my videos featured in some pretty weird places, mostly amusing. You can see some of the screen grabs of them here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...073741830.260010257436114&type=1&l=20540bc700

One of them stood out though and slightly annoyed me. A website promoting things in Melbourne Australia has used one of my videos without any real recognition or mention. The video is not even about Melbourne! It seems to me that someone has made this website for the specific purpose of generating income from the Google ads on it. They have no real content of their own, but are posting loads of YouTube videos loosely related to Melbourne to make it appear that their site has content.

They are also using the video comments straight from YouTube. That's the only place on the page where I am mentioned at all. People can comment on this page by the look of it, but the existing comments are all copied from YouTube. I don't know if I should upset by this or just glad that someone is promoting my monetised video.

Judging by the YouTube analytics on this video, it seems like this site has gotten me no traffic whatsoever at this stage anyway. I probably would not mind what they have done if they had added some of their own thoughts on the video. But I just think they are adding videos without even watching them.

The link to the offending page is here: http://aboutmelbourne.org/a-visit-to-the-national-motorcycle-museum/

The link to my original video on YouTube is here:

Should I bother doing anything about this do you think? Or just leave it?

So if they make money from an ad when the vid is shown? ... Do you make money from the vid also? .... If yes ... Then that's YT's problem I guess....

If it's cutting your income then report them! ...

Or at least demand that they 'ask permission' from you and/or make public thanks to you in some way on screen.....????

I hate when some snot nose decided they have 'this amazing idea (that will help the local area/tourism) ... Oh AND MAKE THEM MONEY!! .... But isn't prepared to put in their own time to actually experience/record what they want to promote.... !?!? ...

Personally I'd ride down there right away and knock loudly on their screen door!! .... Demand a fresh pot of tea and some lamingtons .... And chat about how to right this grievous abberation of intellectual property hijacking!! ....

No tea or lamingtons?? .... Set their front lawn on fire and ride off into the smoke haze!! ;)

Those are mostly parked domains or useless websites that are there taking up e-space running from a search engine or automated blogging software.
They just mash up related information about a subject to redirect traffic and serve ads. You get no views from such websites because as soon as people get there and figure out that nothing works, they leave.

I googled my name and found nothing because it conflicts with an anime called "fate/stay night" where the main character is called Shirou and there's also another character called Rider so there's no way to get to me using google.
Even searching on youtube puts my channel at the 4th result.

Googling my other 2 usernames shows that somebody stole my made-up nickname and the other nickname it's all over the internet, shows forums and random websites I'm in since I started using it.

I don't know the laws to the letter so can't say "sue them" or "there's noting you can do" or whatever, but this would piss me off to no end, especially if someone is making money off your work. I'd try do some digging to see if its legal. I can't see how it could be but the world we live in has some pretty stupid laws and rules... :/

i mean take it as a compliment they are using ur work. and be mad if ur losing money.

like janx101 said light their front yard on fire!

If you're really pissed off about it tell them to take it down. They probably have some kind of script that's pulling "relevant" content from where ever it finds it.

If you want to find out why they're using your video or ask them to remove it the domain owner is Melissa Ainuddin. Her email address is melissaainuddin@gmail.com.

I don't think that having my vids on their site would make any difference to income generated on those YT ads. But they would be making something perhaps from the other ads surrounding the embedded video. Well, if they had a site worth visiting they would make income anyway, by the look of their piece of crap site, I cannot imagine them earning too much at all. They have a lot to learn about internet marketing. I would not mind some lamingtons, perhaps I will ask them when I email them!

Yeah, that's what I figured about the site. No one is going to see it and think it is a great place to check out more. They'd be gone in under 20 seconds I think. That's interesting about your username, I will have to ask my daughter if she knows of the Shirou character, she is right into Anime at the moment. I have another online persona as well that I have had since 2007. I googled that once and found anther person with the same name all over the place!

I don't think that any laws would be broken as they are just embedding YouTube videos and anyone can do that on their site. The annoying thing is that they are just using some sort of software to grab videos by tags I guess instead of handpicking them and creating meaningful content to go along with the video. I guess it annoys me because if someone just happened to come across that page and then went through to my channel, they may think that it was my crappy site or that i had posted it there, without even looking further into the site to discover that they have done the same thing to hundreds of videos. The other funny thing I found while looking through the site was a video that grabbed my attention, I clicked on it to open it in YouTube to find out who the real creator was and I discovered that I had commented on the vid 3 years ago on my old user! :o

I would take it as a compliment if I thought they had hand picked my video. But if they had, there is no way that it would even be on that site as my video has nothing to do with what the site is about. Which is the city of Melbourne. The only connection to my video is that I recorded it on my return trip from Melbourne and state this in the video description. Which is how I think their bots picked up on the vid in the first place.

Thanks for that info Kryten. I did not even think to search whois.net for their info. I think I will email her and let her know that her methods are shit. She probably heard that you can make money of hosting Google ads, so they whipped up a few sites, put robots in place to automatically update each category on the site every few hours to make it look like the site is actively being used. But they have no idea that search engines and people are smarter than that. She will make nothing from those ads I am guessing. I even have her address now so maybe I'll get RidingWithTom or Cruisin650 to go around and do burnouts on her lawn or something!

The adds on the video would be your own adverts! Anything on the actual site is for them, and you're right, they won't earn anything

It's just a scraper website that holds no value, nothing you can really do about it - You can complain to the host if you wanted due to copyright blah blah

Ha! I just had a better look at the address, which is inner suburbs of Melbourne in Carlton, so no lawns. It is an apartment building!
