Well, I got a shop to take a look at my bike. They said that the frame would need to be replaced. As for the reason it wouldn't start; 1-2 hours of diagnosis work before they could even tell me how much it would cost to get the bike running again.
~$2000 for the frame
$55 per hours for labor (god only knows how many hours it would take to remount everything to a new frame and get the bike running again)
$??? for parts
I'd say that the bike is totaled. So, no bike for me for a while. Now the only thing left is to see what my insurance will do...Not a good way to go back to school.

Any idea how/why the frame snapped in the first place ?

Sorry to hear all that anyway. Hopefully you can get some insurance money and replace the bike.
 
Should be covered under your comprehensive insurance since it's not maintenance related. Of course if you have a garage, you might look for a frame and swap everything over. You'd need help lifting the engine out but everything else you can do yourself. Just time and patience 8-)

The only thing I can think of is that July 2010 I got forced off the road by an idiot in an SUV who was talking on his phone. I ended up lowsiding in a gravel driveway; the drive never even saw me and since I didn't have a helmet cam I couldn't remember the license plate. The snapped frame is on the same side I went down on, so if that didn't do it I don't know what caused it.
 
That's a real bummer. Yeah first see if the insurance would cover it, or something. If they don't, either see if you could get a decent price for the bike or how much money a used frame (and title I guess too) goes for. I bet you could rebuild the bike if you took your time.

I may have missed it, but exactly how did you get a cracked frame anyway?

OP posted this about 5 posts down from the top...

damn, such bad news must come with a heavy heart. my simpathies. my advice: first speak with the insurance, second(if first fails) buy a used frame and put the bike together yourself, thirdly(if all else fails) se what you can get for the bike as is to get yourself another bike. I'm actually new in the "motorcycle world" and since i have started with this I have been loving every min of riding. quote from a flick i saw once: "keep on keeping on......"

About an hour ago, Nationwide sent someone to take photos for an appraisal, so we'll see what they say. Even if they decline to cover my bike, I'm going to try and get a newer bike. Plus, a local bike shop has one of my dream bikes for sale; a 2008 CBR600RR Graffiti.
 
That sucks. Part is out. Probably the the best way to recoup some cash.

My riding mate has an 08 graffiti. Nice ride fo sho.
