Hey guys Im new up here and I just got my channel on youtube going, I only have like a channel trailer and a riding montage but thats beside the point, I wanted to know if anyone had any tips or advice for recording voice audio from a secondary source from the camera, and syncing it to the video when you edit? My camera doesn't have an external mic jack and i cant seem to open it up to wire one in myself. Any advice is appreciated and go check out my new channel!

External recorder like the Zoom H2n (think it's called that).

Seitch on cam and hit record, same on the Zoom, pip the horn, set off :)

My usual method using external audio is to clap in front of the camera. It helps sync not only the audio, but the video as well. With motovlogging it's not as big of a deal though as the audio is the main things you'd need to sync. A quick horn beep is enough. In your editor just load the main video + audio, then the external audio and syn the waveforms where you see the spike from the horn.

Awesome, thank you, always wondered how that worked exactly, I'll try it out once I get me voice recorder, any suggestions on a recorder?

I've used Zoom products with great success in the past. Can't think of other brands off the top of my head. If you haven't already, check out bhphotovideo.com for lots of options and great comparisons/reviews from professionals that have used them.

I am actually using a setup that records audio and video separately. This is because i already owned a action cam and a portable sound recorder so it was much cheaper than buying a new go pro and such. I also believe it gives more freedom in editing because you now have 2 audio sources.

Welcome, I think you have to at least mention what camera, microphone and editing software you are having or planning to use.

Just about anything will work-- though it's an excellent idea to record separate audio. I've yet to find an action cam that didn't have terrible audio quality, even with an external.

I use a Tascam DR-40 with a helmet and external mic-- gives me two channels of very high quality audio. It's overkill for most folks, but it works exceptionally well and has a number of features you won't find on consumer-oriented stuff, like the ability to set channel gain independently and on the fly.

Syncing audio is easy enough-- the clap method as mentioned above is still in use by everyone for a pretty good reason: It works. Most professional edit tools will also do it for you automagically. One thing to remember is to do a sync action every time to start recording, as if you're using an external recorder, you'll likely just let it roll while stopping your cameras during generally uninteresting moments. I do this one-handed by just making a fist and extending my fingers three times. Works great.
