I live in Texas and don't like it very much for riding. The issues are allergies, winter, and weather changes. I sneeze, have a stuffy nose, or some allergy issue everyday and im tired of it. I would really like somewhere where it doesn't have snow and ice so i can ride all year round. The weather in Texas changes too frequently and i think it rains too much but i will take a little rain over 80F one day and 43F the next. I was thinking of Arizona but was concerned about the dust storms. Will a K&N air filter help with that issue? Also anywhere in Texas i can at least avoid the ice and allergies?

The thing about Texas is that it depends on where you live. Texas is bigger than a lot of countries. We rarely get snow here near the gulf coast, but farther north it is fairly common.l. West Texas is desert like and mountainous. Central Texas is nice and hilly, East Texas is flat as a pancake  The only changes in elevation I have access to in my immediate area are the freeway overpasses.

I can and do ride year round. I've never had a 'winter' wardrobe. Of course, the heat can be oppressive at times. Last year (or was it the year before?) with 40+ straight days of 100+F/38C with peaks at 108F/42C really took a toll on me in full riding gear.

No filtering/lane-splitting though which makes sitting still in the heat even worse. :x

Texas Coast was my idea but don't like the constant rain. I might be screwed!

Then you should certainly avoid the Pacific North West at all cost. Here in the Seattle, WA area it rains nearly 300 days a year. While it may not be monsoon down pour, it stays pretty gloomy for most of the year. When summer hits, the weather stays moderate, 85 with a rare triple digit occurrence.

There are plenty of mountain roads with nice sweeping twists and turns to break up some of the flatter lands. The Puget Sound area has very nice scenery, but the weather can be very unpredictable.

I could go on and on about stupid drivers, but most of them are tourists from out of country.

It's not like that at all. Although according to Wikipedia, we get more rain per year than Seattle, It's not 300+ days of rain per year. Not even close! When it rains, it RAINS! It's not a daily drizzle. And it's not often enough to, errr, dampen your riding time. (see what I did there?)

I ride in NJ.. here it rains morons. people tailgating, texting, and changing lanes without a care in the world, all at the same time. I will take problems with weather any day. beats getting run over.

Ha

Hahaha

You Americans wouldn't last two minutes in the UK. We're supposed to be basking in sunshine at this time of year.

We've had an 8 month long winter. It was snowing today in the south - the warmest place in the country.

You have no idea what its like to own a motorbike you can't use for 3/4 of a year because of the weather.

Oh you make me laugh.

Czech Republic... Well, what to say. Weather is typical spring/summer/autumn/winter with heaps of snow and -20C temperature in winter and with nice warm summer at 30C. Spring and autumn are often rainy and cloudy. Sometimes you can't predict if it's going to rain or not.

The roads are mostly bad, full of potholes, cracks and slippery patches from repairs. If you see no potholes, be sure there will be 'railways' (best in combination with potholes, try zig-zaging between holes in this 'valley'). I'm not mentioning ours favourite gravel and other little stuff en masse lying on the road. But major roads are overall in a good state, lot of them are being continously fully repaired.

Drivers here are often reckless. I have nothing against speeding if you keep your lane and it's clear which direction you're going to rush. But I hate ignorant drivers whom are going to overtake even when they see me coming from opossing direction. They're hoping you will move to the very side of the road to avoid crash. Some of them will willingly try to cut you or block your way just because you're riding a bike. Others will try to race you with their 1.9 TDi Octavias hoping to beat the machine which accelerates from 0kph to 100kph in 3,5 seconds. But there are also some good guys. When they hear you coming, they will clear a way for you so you can safely filter.

The bikers here are mostly bunch of great guys. I remember when I first time ran out of fuel on my old 125cc and had to pull the bike few hundrer meters to the near gas station. Three bikers stopped and asked me if I need some help. That was a deciding moment for me to delve deeper into this comunity.

It's not like that at all.

2nd'd. Lived in Houston for 23 years, "constant" is the last word I'd use to describe the rain pattern.

I wouldn't even think about living there for more than 2 minutes, so you're probably right.

Tn is full of idiots. I've either driven or ridden in about 40 states, and this place is full of what are by FAR the worst drivers I've ever seen.

Otherwise, it's a pretty awesome place for a rider to live. :)

I live just north of the Atlanta area in Georgia. I'm about an hours drive from some of the most beautiful mountain roads, so I'm pretty happy with my riding circumstances.

Its always beautiful where I live, only rains at night, daytime hours are 80*F during the summer and 65*F during the winter, night time hours are 60*F Summer and 50*F Winter, the wind never blows hard, just a nice gentle breeze in the mornings. All the roads are near new in their condition i.e: no potholes, jaggery seal lines, cracks they are nearly perfect in condition. All the roads here are surrounded by breathtaking scenery, wooded areas and lush green pastures and none of them are straight, all the roads are gently winding long rides through the rollong hills or perfectly cambered switchbacks going through the mountains for hundreds of miles. All the car drivers here are extremely thoughtful of bikers, often going to great lengths and inconvenience to them ensuring we have a safe ride. All the bikers and motorcyclists around here always lend a hand to fellow bikers in need, you'll often see bikers in full leathers walking through the neighborhoods in the evening hours to lend a hand to anyone working on their bike out in the garage, just last night one of them came by when I was changing oil, I didn't need help but he called his wife to go grab some beer and we sat around talking bikes all night, other bikers kept stopping by and before you know it we were having a full fledged party. My boss showed up, who also rides bikes, and said I can have the next two days off paid so I could recover fully from the unexpected party. Cagers driving by would honk at us waving and giving thumbs up. Man.. I love this place!!

Province....Saskatchewan
Cons: The only twisty roads are straight ones with potholes
All the roads have potholes
Riding season consists of 1/3rd the year
No lane filtering.
Lots of stupid animals that run at you.
Lots of stupid people that run at you.
It's always excessively windy
It's usually to cold to take out the liner for an entire day but way to hot during the day to wear one.
Squids making the our insurance go up 37% on average this year and as high as an 80% increase
Only reason to ride here is to go through it.

Pro's (OMG there are actually some)
The Squids can't tough the weather most days
Most riders wave unless they are wearing a patch
No matter where you break down, someone will find you and help you
You can ride anywhere if you have the means to 1) Actually ride anywhere 2) not get caught
Cops are chill about us
I score free slushies at gas stations if it's a girl working :)

Pros: great windy roads, great all year riding weather, high speed broadband for uploads, best coffee, twisty roads are easy to get to.

Cons: no lane splitting, crazy speeding and hooning fines, stupid fuel prices, fuckwit cops, potholes, wildlife, drop bears,

Eh, riding in missouri isn't the best I suppose. Tons of twisties and blind corners. Lots of hills as well. Little to no cops on the back roads.

Cons, we experience the severity of every season of weather, humidity is tough, wind tends to be reach high gust speeds, used sport bike market is expensive or low in selection, and crazy ass cagers.

In my current state, I am wasted.
PROS: Any speed will feel fast and I will fly like Superman.
CONS: I will most certainly crash and kill myself if not someone else.

"I swear to drunk I'm not god officer"

On a serious note. My 'Province', Ontario has the highest insurance rates in Canada.

Likely not... although they are more free flowing when clean the air flow through them becomes restrictive with lower amounts of particulate.

In the interest of full disclosure I'm only speaking from testing on the stock air filter vs the K&N for the EX500.

Interesting Knoxxville, TN is actually rated as the 9th Best City to drive in.

Oh you make me laugh.

Some of us ride even if it gets a little chilly or rainy. But you keep on being super proud of having a bike in the garage 3/4 of the year! LOL. Usually Americans are the Xenophobic ones! Nah, just messin' with ya, but I have to say that's the first time I've seen someone gloat about their countries BAD weather! LOL

I'm in Missouri; and here are my thoughts;

PROS:

A good 8-10 month riding season if you're not a total wuss and have some decent gear. Although I know a lot of folks only like to ride on sunny warm days. But a good 8-10 months out of most years it's above 45F at least a couple days a week. I ride 12 months out of the year, myself. It's still above 60 several months of the year though for you Sunday riders.

Rural! I must be different but all I see is vloggers in bumper to bumper traffic in the city. Blech. Rural twisty roads and wide open spaces is fantastic.

Close to some of the best roads in the country. The Ozarks in MO, some of the roads in Arkansas, and on east to Tennessee and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Good people for the most part. Folks will stop if you're broken down on the side of the road, strike up a conversation with you while you're getting gas, etc.

Missouri is a state that, in response to it being one of the deadliest states for motorcycles, is ramping up efforts to better cater to bikers. From a statewide "watch for motorcycles" ad campaign, to more motorcycle officers, to stricter enforcement when cagers enter the right-of-way of a motorcycle. Missouri cops have, in fact, used video evidence to issue steep tickets to drivers who cut off or pull out in front of motorcylists! Recently I read in the paper of a guy submitting video from a helmet cam to his local police, and they issued a 'Careless and Imprudent' ticket to the driver. In MO, a CNI ticket automatically suspends your license until your court date, so the judge can determine if you get it back, or if it stays suspended for a year. NOT a slap on the wrist!

We get 4 full seasons. Beautiful leaves in the fall, gorgeous spring days, hot summers, and even some snow in the winter (but not so much it puts you out of commission for months, but enough to enjoy for a couple days!)

CONS:

One of the more dangerous states (statistically speaking!) for motorcycles. I chalk it up to bad drivers and the fact that motorcycles seem to be an occasional weekend pleasure for most folks, so drivers aren't used to seeing motorcycles. You really only see bikes on sunny warm days.

You only see bikes on sunny warm days!

Weather can be unpredictable. If you say "I don't ride in the rain" and you live in Missouri, that translates into "I do not own a motorcycle". Ride long enough and far enough, and you'll get caught in an unforecasted torrential downpour.

Humidity in the summer is rough. Sometimes you step outside and you feel like you're swimming. You sweat the instant you step outside. Not bad when moving though; get away from the city and enjoy some wide open roads for a while!

Wouldn't have it anywhere else, myself.

Oh- on the question of the K&N filter... generally high performance filters filter LESS particles than OE, which allows better airflow. Generally speaking, your OEM filter is the best filter in dusty/adverse conditions.

That's pretty scary. Makes me wonder how shady their study techniques were.
