Poor Daytona....

GHOSTs

GHOST SPROCKET
An annoying ticking turned into a rattle and a rattle which was discovered to be rather bloody nasty!

The valve buckets were bent and camshaft was out of shape too....

Triumph have never seen this before and have no idea how this happened!

Around £900-£1200 to get it sorted.

Gutted but I love my Daytona......

How old is the bike? Even outnof warranty you may have a goodwill case for a contribution. It's down to Triumph and how good your dealer is.

There are laws such as the sale of goods act where fitnesa for purpose applies and a lifetime component failing early may be enough grounds for you to pursue for it to be repaired at Triumph's expense.

I'd do a dig, and contact Triumph about it, get some hard facts together and some "proper" advice to wave at them, might get you some welcome assistance.

Hi mate,

It's a 2008 bike. The dealer is Lings of Ipswich.
They did say they had asked Triumph but the declined the goodwill.....
I'm not sure why if it's a problem they had never seen!
They can't explain how or why this has happened!

They did say it's nothing g that I'm doing.....I can't really afford it but hey ho :(

Contact Triumph yourself. It has to be a significantly defective part or manufacturing error that caused it. Try and get a written report off the garage and ask if it had gone any further if it could have been life threateningly (loss of power on a motorway would be just that). Don't let it go at all for that kind of money. Twitter is your friend for this kind of thing, post a jpeg of an open letter to triumph and link it in to a major forum with a big triumph following too. £1000 repair for something like that isn't good publicity and can threaten the second hand price, and they've done loads of pcp deals where they have a guaranteed minimum buy-back price that could be affected if you do it properly.

Cheers lurch,

Just emailed them....I'm not hopeful but worth a shot.

It's defiantly manufacturing issue as mechanic said there's no way I could have done that......I'm angry as like u say resale value is buggered now

Well, if it gets out, then it will knock all Triumphs.

Try and get the media on your side if you can.

But written reports from the garage are important here.

So get them to write basically what they have told me about how they didn't know how it happened?

I would. Have you authorised the work yet? If not don't, say you need a written report of what they said, and if you have authorised it, but they've not started on the bike tell them to stop for now and do the report.

But start digging now in the Sale of Goods Act for fit for purpose with regards to a motor vehicle, and research how some or all the items should be lifetime. A shaft should never go really.

I used to work for Nissan and the dash clocks failed on a 10 year old Almera. Nissan said no, the guy did a well researched letter about how they should be lifetime and Nissan agreed 95%

My old Honda XL100 had the same sort of problem in 1984. Pistons completely bent out of shape and knackered overhead cam.

But that was definitely user error. A lack of oil tends to do that to an engine. Didn't half rattle bad after that, and power gone. Schoolboy error from a schoolboy at the time, and then done over like a school of kippers by the dealer, who will have fixed it for £50 and sold on for 500% profit.

Mate effectively the bike is 'not fit for purpose' and accordingly I believe Triumph should have a duty of care to you the consumer to fix a defective product or at the very least give you a concrete explanation as to what caused such a massive failure. Dig your heels in and good luck ;-)

Remembered the salient point from the Sales of Goods Act. Paraphrased it's about being able to enjoy the product free from manufacturing defects for a reasonable period of time.
The warranty period is the warranty period and covers all but fair wear and tear and consumables, and is an extension of the warranty. It isn't reasonable that after so few years that a part designed to fit in a performance bike has failed unless the engine has been left to significant neglect or abuse, which would be for them to prove. If you consider the service schedule, look through and see which serviceable items could affect the parts needed. If servicing has no bearing on this failure, insofar that it would have failed regardless, then it is unequivocally defective. To this end, it would be worth asking if there is anything that could have caused or accelerated this failure, and apply the answers to your knowledge of the bike.

Now a nifty thing, if you bought the bike from a dealer and not privately, is that recourse can be taken on the seller, again, within a reasonable period of time, and your friend here may also be that it was advertised with service history.

Much to the annoyance of one fly by night car dealer, I had printed off his auto trader advert to use as proof in him fixing a few things that were ignored, and then shopped him to VOSA for being a twat, er shopped him for issuing my MOT certificate at a time that I was test driving the car. I hope he got his pants pulled down and violated with a pineapple the dishonest little prick.

Lings are normally pretty good at fighting your corner which surprises me

They were.

They suggested that Triumph do it as goodwill but they rejected it.......

I look after my bike- I have to as use it to get to work and I love it so I don't abuse it.....

I'm speaking directly to triumph tomorrow fingers crossed

If Lings have that reputation then I suspect they'll back you all the way, but there's only so far a dealer can go with a manufacturer without a customer leaning some direct pressure. Once you've had some initial contact with them, finding the contact details of someone senior is worthwhile as if they get bothered by things the first and second line couldn't handle, then they tend to get on with making it go away, especially as this matter, at cost price, is very little to them, but makes a big difference to you.

Don't forget to tell them it's putting you off a potential trade up later this year ;)
